Lately I have been working on a kitchen area in my house. I want to install an RO system as my well water is nasty hard with soluble iron.
I was told by fish people, many times. that RO water is PH 7. Well it all depends. My research lately shows a standards RO system with no filtration AFTER the membrane makes the water acidic. 6.0 to 6.5.
This is due to the filtration of hydrogen ion atoms. Negative charges ones are larger than positive so more get filtered, this make the water acidic. But you can filter the water again after the membrane thru coconut shells and other material to add proper minerals back in to neutralize PH or even add to it to make it more our naturally acceptable type of water. That is per taste.
Since standard RO water is acidic you have to be VERY careful what it is stored in and in the RO system it self as it will break down most materials leaching it into the RO water itself.
NOW, no idea how slightly acid water pertains to herps. But does not sound normal to me. But I'm not expert, I just thought I'd share some info as so many people are relying on RO water more and more.
