History of albino annulata

John Fraser Jul 08, 2011 10:57 AM

Hi all, I don't make it to the boards very often here, but had saw some threads earlier about albino Mexican milksnakes now being produced. Could someone update me on the actual history of how the albino annulata came into availiability? Was there an original wild-caught albino to get these started or did a lucky triangulum keeper/breeder hatch one out?? Or is it from crossing other albino subspecies such as nelsoni into the pot to make them? I hope not, but anyway, I know someone here will know the details.........Thanks, A longtime milksnake keeper, John F.

Hey John, good to see you man.
Many years ago Bill Cobb from Kingman AZ. field collected a pair of normals from around freer. He bred them for a couple years and sold some f1 babies to susan hardy. In turn she grew them up and bred them together and produced the first amel annulata. She then got with bill and bought the adults as well and had the whole ball of wax.Down the line she figured out what parent was het ( it was only one of the w/c's that was het cause bill never saw a visual amel himself but he was spitting out a few hets every year and susan was just very lucky when she picked her pair).
Anyway, thats pretty much how it went yada yada and now all the snakes are pretty much back with bill on loan or something.
As the world turns.LOL.

...very genuine, and very cool locality-specific animals!

Here are some more details regarding them from you and Susan Hardy that I have from back in 2009.

Amel annulata history

Bill Cobb collected a adult pair under a fridge door. He bred them for a couple years and Susan Hardy bought some of the offspring from him just to have pure locale lines. She raised them up and lo and behold popped out two amels. She didn't say anything to anybody and popped out two more the next year. Then Bill got a hold of her and asked if she was interested in the adults. Of coarse she jumped on them and still didn't say anything.

She then took some of her poss hets that she had and bred back to the adults and figured out that the female adult that Bill had caught was a het. The male was normal so thats why he never produced a visual himself.

The same story told by Susan Hardy recently

Bill Cobb collected a pair from Freer, TX under a refrigerator, when he bred them he talked Susan into buying a pair. That was in 99'. In 2001 she bred the pair for the first time, 6 eggs, and 2 of them were albino. In 2003 she bred the albino male that hatched to the original female she had bought, that produced 4 more albinos and 3 hets. The original male ended up dying before it was bred to an albino to see if he too was infact het albino.

As to the exact county Shannon, being they were found near Freer, they should be of Duval county origin then......

Don't know much about history but I know I want them. I just don't know what a pair of hets runs.
