The Most Disappointing Clutch Ever!

Ophidiophile Jul 08, 2011 06:18 PM

Just kidding! But here's the story:

In early 2006, I bought a male clutchmate to Jared Horenstein's only second ever produced Super Stripe. At the time, the difference between Specters and Yellow Bellies was not completely clear. Since I bought him, the consensus was among virtually everyone who saw him in person or pictures was that he was almost certainly a specter. Dorsally he definitely appeared Specter and ventrally he didn't really look yellow belly at all. Here he is as he looks now:

Last year, he repeatedly bred a Yellow Belly female but unfortunately she didn't produce. This year I bred him to a bunch of different females including my friend Rich's Yellow Belly. She produced a small clutch (4 good eggs) and they hatched on July 4th... The result: No Super Stripes -- my male is not a Specter, my heart sank. Damn what an incredible disappointment!!

Oh yeah, then I remembered to take a good look at what he DID produce...

Now I'm doing the happy dance! Maybe my most awesome clutch ever!

Just to clarify, Jared did not sell him to me as a specter. So he was completely truthful and I consider him a great guy!

I never would have guessed he was a YB.
Congrats though!
