New Rack

a153fish Jul 09, 2011 06:07 PM

I built this one to fit Sterilite 1860, 41 qrt tubs. I'm not a carpenter but thses were not very hard to build. I took the ideah for the peg board shelves, from Jason Nelson. But I made it with 2x2's instead of the metal frames he used. It has 10 tubs right now and room on top for at least one more.

Very nice! I like the full lenght view of the boxes, being able to see the snakes. I'm a terrarium tank guy running out of room with last years holdbacks and sittin on 13 alterna eggs, but i think that looks great. The brooksi are gonna love it. Dave. ps. tank dwellers are 1 mex blk, 3 brooksi, 3 adult alterna, 2 rosey boas, 1 wc desert cal king all kept separate, and 2 ball pythons kept together in 100 gal tank. Oh, and son's chondro...

LOL! The first time I read this I thought you said you kept them ALL in a 100 gallon tank! Then I read it again, lol. Thanks, I like it too! I wish I had room for a few more like it!

Jorge, that is awesome man!!! If you don't mind me asking, how much did it cost to build that rack? Looks like you made the most out of the materials. Well done. Is it heated?

The pegboard was 15 bucks for a 4x8 sheet, which I was able to get 5 shelves from each one. I bought 6 sheets and had them cut it at HOME DEPOT in 18" sections. Then When I got home I cut the excess off each shelf which is the peice you see in the middle. After I built it I noticed the tubs tend to bow a bit in the middle. It left a little too much space in the mid section for the snakes to push thru, so I had the idea to place the small sections to lift the middle of the tubs and it works great! Now the whole tub is pushed up snuggly upwards to the pegborad, but not too tight either. The 2x2 were 1.58 each I think. Everything was 8 foot lengths, and I cut them to size as I was building each section. I had 3" screws left over from a previous project, but I did buy a box of 1 1/4" deck screws for the peg board. I had this project in mind for about a year so I started collecting the tubs a few at a time. When I started buying them they were 7 and some change, today they are almost 10 bucks each. All together I would estimate the cost in todays prices would be between 250.00 and 300.00 dollars, including the tubs. I have a few extra tubs too, so cleaning will be easy. Just put a clean tub in and take the dirty one outside and hose off. I really like it so far, and I can fit about 4 or 5 adult Florida Kings in each one

I was just looking at the thing again, and man it would be cool to have a tower like this, connected with flex tubes so the snake/snakes could travel all the way up or down! I would need a mansion for all my snakes to fit in, lol!

LOL!!!,.....could you just imagine how time consuming it would be to hunt some of them down in a big snake "condo" like that. I can just picture each snake you have having it's own tower condo rack system..LOL!. You would have to be a millionaire with a HUGE facility..LOL!
