Now there are 10

mrkent Jul 09, 2011 11:36 PM

Ten are out, one died in egg, and 3 have yet to pip. I may cut those last three eggs tomorrow if nothing happens.

Kind of hard to tell but there are 10 in this pic (I think!)

HAHA!!....I hear ya Kent!

Way to go on the nice hatchlings man. Yeah, after the second day and the others are out, I usually carefully slice a "window" at the very top position of the egg for them just in case they can't get out for whatever reason.

Wow, they are all so nice! That is just outstanding! What are you going to do with all those babies? How do you plan to start them feeding?
How many days from first pip to last hatch totally out of egg were they, or do you know yet? As you said three haven't done anything as of now. My pyros took six days from first pip to last out of egg, not all hatching at about the same time, which was what I had originally thought they would do.

Those are ALL spectacular. Very clean and bright. Congrats. keep us posted on the feeding. Im prob 40 days behind you with my alterna, so if you come up with any tricks, let us know...Dave. ps. how many days until first pipped? and no, I still would not cut eggs yet...

mrkent Jul 10, 2011 12:56 PM

To answer Bob and Dave's questions, the first pip was at day 72. Number 10 came out last night, day 74. I went ahead and cut small slits in the 3 remaining eggs this morning.

As far as feeding goes I will start by offering f/t pinkies after they shed. I have several breeder mice, so there will be litters coming along if I need to try offering live pinkies. I have a few frozen anoles that I can use for scenting if needed.

I also know a guy in Florida, Manny Hernandez, that I can get more anoles from if I need to.

I will be referring to the article on the alterna page "Feeding Picky Hatchling Alterna".

And then, in about six weeks, if all goes well clutch number two will hatch!

Good times!

Thanks for the great link. A new thing is heating up the lizard tea to get the oil to float to the surface. Never though of that. I am going to try unscented newborn live pinks first with my pyro babies, though.

Good luck. I expect to have at least some that are challenging.
