Keeping Pits is looking more attractive.

BobS Jul 10, 2011 02:30 PM

Whenever I check in and see the quarrels. Seems a big part of it is not respecting that other folks see things differently and choose to do things differently.

Everyone should be free to decide what is best for them and their animals without condescending attitudes.

Folks should be free to banter about what if?... I observed this... What do you think this means?... Why would you surmise that from what you saw?...
Without getting dumped on or getting egos all out of whack.

Take the nuggets of the wonderful info available here, decide what you are willing to do and leave the others to do what they want to do. Otherwise you will drive yourself CRAZY.

I love you guys but am sure glad I don't live next door to many of you!

My sentiments exactly. One of the reasons that I will very rarely post anything here. I refuse to get into any disagreements with anyone here. This is a part of my life that will never go away. Something that I enjoy that few will ever understand.
I am 48 years young and have had snakes since I was 6 years old. I continue to learn every year which is a reason why this will ALWAYS be in my blood. Why waste the time arguing?
We must all understand that there are different points of view. We must all understand that there will always be those that feel that their opinion is the correct opinion. For instance, someone posted a YouTube video of what they considered to be an indigo. Although somewhat difficult to tell, I felt pretty confident that the snake this person was calling an Indigo was a black racer. I noted that someone did point out THEIR OPINION that the snake was a black racer. The person that posted disagreed and said that they knew the difference between the two. At that point, why bother to contradict? It just leads to conflicts and turns in a back and forth battle of wills that will just continue on and on..........JUST LET IT GO! Suck it up and realize that the other persons opinion is just that, AN OPINION!
At one time not to long ago, there were some great people on this forum that loved/still love kingsnakes. Some of those people were Keith Hillson and Peter Jolles. They did, and could still bring so much to this forum but were censored and (I believe) barred from posting here. Quite a shame because both of these guys are top notch and know kingsnakes. I for one am sorry that neither one of them posts here anymore. They really contributed a lot. Those were the days.................

Brad,

I'm another guy who has been on this forum about a dozen years, but rarely posts. I certainly remember the days where this was pretty much the "locality eastern king" forum, and guys like Hillson and Jolles dominated the posts. I enjoyed many of their posts, but I'm not surprised that they got banned. They were unable to follow your advice and to quote you "JUST LET IT GO! Suck it up and realize that the other persons opinion is just that, AN OPINION! "

The same old arguments were going on back then, and people started throwing insults and threats just like they do now. What blows my mind is who wasn't banned from that incident.

I have learned quite a bit about kingsnakes and husbandry from this forum over the past dozen years, but I find that each year I learn less and less and find myself wading through more and more of the same old arguments by people who take themselves far too seriously. Hopefully newbies can negotiate the minefield of useless information on here to glean some good knowledge. For the more experienced keepers this site is about useless unless you enjoy the bickering.

Jlassiter Jul 10, 2011 10:53 PM

I, too have been here a decade or more......
Great post Greg.....I remember this as the Chainking forum too.......
And Keith was one of the first to argue many things........especially with FR.....lol

Of course he and Peter are knowledgeable but are, too passionate like most of us here.........

Still, there are some here that cannot "just let it go"......
That, I guess is their expression of passion, bit I do see too many one sided views from both sides of most of these arguments.........no one here is open minded any more.........

How do you all think the cookie cutter care sheets were made?
Through trial and error........done by many before us now.........there is certainly a much better way to keep these king snakes than what is spelled out in those care sheets........and I coomend those that try and learn things differently.......

I always disliked conforming to the masses.......

Wow, Didn't realize Pits ate Rattlesnakes and that Forum had it's Moments too.....

It's nice to shoot the breeze with folks that like the same things you do. Even busting each other and debating helps you figure things out. Just wish it was easier to do without it crossing the line and getting ugly.

I'm an adult and have had to deal with Knuckleheads in real life like everybody else and have to rein in my own knuckleheadededness (real word?)

Oh well.....

Hard not to look at this Forum and not think it's like a terrarium of sorts and we are all doing this to each other when someone gets too close or threatens us or our views. LOL
Have a good day.

Thanks.

**Wow, Didn't realize Pits ate Rattlesnakes**

In the early 1990's I found this Arizona Black rattlesnake (Crotalus cerberus) den. I went to it every spring, then one year (mid 1990's) I noticed a couple of Sonoran Gopher snakes at the den, coiled up right next to the AZ Blacks. But I noticed one of the smaller gopher snakes was really FAT! So I caught it and realized that there was NO WAY that the small gopher snake could have eaten a huge pack rat......so I took the gopher snake home. A few days later it took a dump.....but there was still a huge lump in it. A copuple of days later it regurgitated a rattlesnake head and about 6 inches of neck, a Arizona Black rattlesnake that would have been longer than the gopher snake.

So yes, gopher snakes can and do eat rattlesnakes.

I would not worry about it. Maturity abounds with the pit keepers much more than a select few with kings.

Trust me on this one!!

By the way, I have always enjoyed pics of your bullsnakes!!

Glad you like my bulls. Will post some new pics in the pituophis form in awhile.

One thing I learned about co-habitating my snakes is they don't eat each other, they breed! ( both kings and pits!)So next year maybe I will have to either get them to take an oath of celibacy or separate them during the breeding season or I will soon have a zillion snakes!
