Osaka: A train on the Tokaido Shinkansen Line was halted at Maibara Station on Monday to capture a 1-meter snake found lounging on a passenger seat.
The red-and-black snake, believed to be a nonvenomous Honduran milk snake, was spotted at 8:55 a.m. between Shin-Osaka and Kyoto, according to Central Japan Railway Co.
The snake was captured by the staff of an animal protection center near Maibara Station, the next stop after Kyoto for Tokyo-bound bullet trains.
None of the 200 or so passengers on the Tokyo-bound train were injured, the railroad said.
It believes the snake is probably a pet brought onboard by a passenger who failed to notice that it had escaped from its cage, it said, adding that police are searching for the owner.
JR group companies ask passengers not to bring animals other than small birds and fish in containers into train cars.
The Honduran milk snake is commonly bred in capacity as its vivid coloring has made it a favorite among snake collectors.

４日午前８時55 分ごろ、 東海道新幹線新大阪―京都駅間を走行中のこだま 642 号車内で体長約１メートルのヘビが見つかり、 捕獲のため、列車が一時停車する騒ぎがあった。 乗員乗客にけが人はなかった。
ＪＲ東海によると、車内巡回中の車掌が、 ３号車の座席の上に赤色と黒色のま だら模様のヘビがいるのを見つけた。 こだま６４２号には２００人が乗っていたが、 ３号車の乗客は１人だけで、 すぐに４号車に避難した。 こだまは３号車を閉め切って米原駅まで走行。同駅で動物保護管理センターの職員がヘビを捕獲した。
乗客は米原駅で降車し、後続ののぞみやひかりに乗車。こだま６４２号は名古屋駅で車両を交換し、１５分遅れで出発した。ＪＲ東海広報部の担当者は「どうしてヘビがいたのか。さっぱり分からないが、けが人がなくてよかった」と話していた。
同センターから連絡を受けた日本蛇族学術研究所（群馬県太田市）によると、ペット用に広く輸入されている中米産の「ホンジュラスミルクヘビ」とみられる。無毒でおとなしい性格。研究所員は「持ち運び用の袋の縛り方が甘く、逃げ出したのではないか」と話している。
ＪＲ各社は営業規則で車内へのヘビの持ち込みを禁じている。
