what the hech is going on here?

shannon brown Jul 12, 2011 01:32 PM

ok, so I bred a normal looking albino cal king and got 7 eggs. They are just hatching and there is just one albino in the clutch and 6 normals????WTF? I have used the albino male on several other females in the past and always get 100% duh! whats going on? I guess I could see it if every single one came out normal it would just be a different albino gene.I thought that all the amel genes in cal kings where the same?I am not talking lavender or blonde or hypo or anything weird just plain old amel.
Anyway, here is a pic of the breeder female.

here is the clutch hatching. The normals are a weird color and almost look hypo but its hard to say.I have never seen anything ever mask amel so Im just guessing that they are dbl-het for two lines of albino and the female breeder must have been type 2 or whatever and been just het for type 1.thoughts?

I guess that the single hatchling albino could be a type 1 or 2 or even both huh?

Hi Shannon.

I'm no cal king expert. But as I read your question, I came to the same conclusions you proposed at the end of your post. I think you've got it right. This group now gives you tools to play with for future breedings, to maybe identify the two different genes * . The normal looking babies would be double hets, the two parents and amel baby have to be single or double homozygous.

* - have two diff amel genotypes been isolated and identified, and are being bred? or is that work for the future?

Yeah, that's pretty strange. Seems every now and then something just doesn't pan out.

Maybe sperm retention from last year?

Are you sure that was the only introduction for this year?

If not, then 2 separate albino genes.

Nope, she was a small virgin it was here first time. The male I used on him I have used about 5 years straight with about 8 or 9 different females and always got 100% amels? has to be her.
Do you know of two different amel genes in cal kings Kerby?I don't but you never know. Its still really weird. The weird part is that most are out now and a couple are for sure different looking.I guess I would call them hypo they are weird.
Man, All I wanted was some amels for the pet shops in my area.LOL.....Whatever.

In cal kiings I have only experienced one albino gene, but lots of hypo genes.

I though I recall hearing about 2 albino genes in cal kings, but you would know better than I....

so you bred the same male and female last year and got all T-neg amels? And this year you got normals? Weird.

Otherwise my thoughts were the same as kerbys. Sperm retention or two different amel genes...well, actually both things would have to be happening.

No, this was her first clutch ever. The male I used on her I have used for several years on many different females and always got 100% t negs.Got me man.

how about being put with a normal male at any point...even if for a few hours...do you have normal males in your collection? I have a friend that put 2 Angolan Pythons together...just for a few hours for cleaning purposes...he figured they where too small to breed anyways....and here we are a few months later and he has 4 Angolans babies...

Nope, I see your point but that never happened. And even if it did then every baby would have been normal and just het amel.Hopw can I get one albino?and for the record I keep several of my cal kings in pairs year round in old applegate cages so there is zero chance of anything like that happening.
I guess there is a second amel gene out there and its het for the other.I will breed the same pair next year and I bet I get a few more albinos but still get some normals.I just got screwed on the #s probably.
I will keep a pair of these normals for sure and raise them up and breed them just for fun.
