I just saw the coolest thing at Meijers!

melisondra Sep 30, 2003 01:42 PM

I have been reading about people having plant issues, and while I was walking through the plant section at Meijers I saw something cool! (Meijers is in Ohio/indiana I know, not sure how wide spread they are)

I was looking at plants I used in my cages (and missing my babies)when I saw a Pothos "Tree". What they had done was taken a whole bunch of pothos vines and stuck the "nubs" on the vines into a tall rectangle of that crumbly planters styrofoam stuff. The styrofoam was buried a little in a large pot as were the vine roots. They had so many vines stuck into it though that you could not see any of the styrofoam. They went all the way up to the top and wrapped around to another side.

It looked really neat but they were charging $40 bucks for it =/. Opinions? is this something that could be used in cages? It would be a cynch to make seeing as I have pothos coming out of my ears at home. I dont know how toxic the styrofoam is or if the chams would try to eat it, but it looked like a good idea! just thought I would post!

Have a great week all!

I have an idea for you. This is what I want to do, once I have a ton of pothos to use...
Get a little plastic trellis (those things that look like the end of a rake only gigantic) and a small (18" or so) windo planter box thing. Use that to make a pothos tree, and use it against one wall in the cage, as a place to climb, to keep humidity in, and as a "plant wall" for your chams privacy.
do this, and I will be jealous of you! lol Right now I have just fake leaves wired onto the one side of my chams cage for a leaf wall. it's sad, really...

I've used those 'Pothos trees' with subabdult veileds and Jacksons with no issues. I've noticed some of my adult panthers occasionally (once or twice) eating the styrofoam from artificial vines. As long as they're not eating big amounts of it, I don't see anything wrong.
BTW, I purchase my 'pothos trees' from the local wholesale nursery, at about $8 each. But if you can make them yourself, why spend $40 (or even $8) each!

Probably the only thing I would wonder about is how much mold was building up in the cells of the styrofoam.
