Normal and Axanthic splendidas

DISCERN Jul 13, 2011 10:55 PM

I finally was able to get some half-decent pics of my two splendidas, a normal and an axanthic, both from Don Shores:

Great pets and fun to own! Very underrated, in my opinion.

Splendida are one of my favorite Kings.....
I guess because it is the getula from my parts....Just like most of you all from the East and South East enjoy Chain Kings and Florida Kings I like those Desert Kings......
I have a Male Amel Possible Het albino, a female Axanthic, a female Hypo and a pair of 100% double het for snows........

I used to catch and breed 5 localities of these...Refugio, Calhoun, San Patricio, Aransas and Nueces County animals........It was neat seeing the subtle differences between the localities.......Some leaning toward Holbrooki towards the northern part of their coastal range and then the solid Splendida phenotypes to the south.......

Yep...they are fun animals......and underrated for sure.......

Not many snows and only a few questionable ghosts out there......
I hope to make some soon myself.......

Very nice Billy.......Love em!

That is really cool John!

Yea, I don't understand why, even the normals like I have, are not as popular as anything else. I still can't seem to capture the blue color in pics from the axanthic, but oh well..these will have to do.

LOL....My Axanthic is black and white....kinda different than those blue ones......Don told me he bred the black and whites to the blues a few times and got normals, so there may be two different strains similar to the Floridana Lemke and NE axanthics.....

I have been contemplating herping around here again and starting some more locale Splendidas, but the high yellow sidewalled West Texas ones are the best (imho) and they have great black sockheads......Like around Marfa, Tx.......

Here are some old and new pics of Splendies I've had or have:

And.....he said he bred one of the blues to one of the whites and got both in a clutch, so there is something strange with the genes.......

I've always thought it was pretty bizarre that most hypo splendida and Cal. kings I have ever seen have much darker heads than the rest of their body..LOL!

It seems to be one of lifes great mysteries. Similar to how many licks it actually takes to get to the center of a "Tootsie Pop"..

They are sibling to yours....I kept the pair with the cleanest pattern.........they are growing like weeds and may be up to size to breed next year.........

you must be feeding yours better than i am, they are growing fast and doing well, but I actually just switched them from pinkies to fuzzies.. I traded my 8 good splendida eggs when the first 2 started pipping to a good friend of mine so i no longer needed to save the pinkies so ive been feeding them off to my 2010 splendida and alterna pairs..

Plus Chris....they hatched out at different sizes....some of them were 16 inches when they emerged!
Their mother is HUGE.....She laid some small eggs and some large eggs........Coincidentally the 1.1 I kept hatched out of the large eggs....they are 20 inches already........and eating fuzzies......Soon small adult mice......
