Cal King Clutch Questions

AGoldReptiles Jul 17, 2011 08:32 PM

I produced my first clutch of Cal Kings from a pair of what I thought were normal Coastal Cal Kings. I received 1.2 on a trade a few years ago.

She layed 11 eggs on 5/24. They began to pip on 7/14 and emerged from there eggs on 7/15 & 7/16. So 51 days to pip, at 86-87degrees.

I was expecting some variability in the patterns of these hatchlings, but was not expecting so much in color.

I produced one that is brown like a coastal but has cream bands. Do they take time to turn yellow?

Ten that are dark with cream bands. Will these turn yellow also or did I produce "Desert"phases from my Coastal Phase?

And one that looks exactly like the "Blackbelly" HyperMel posted below. So obviously my normals were hets.

How rare are HyperMels?
How much are they worth? ( Not that I will be selling it,its a keeper)

I look forward to hearing your responses!

Yeah, that cream will change in time to be more like the parents. And the black belly is not really rare or worth much more. I still think that's really cool you had the unexpected surprise like that. Have those shed yet?

Cool. One thing I didn't mention, is the black you see in the babies will turn to dark to medium brown as adults. The brown one will also lighten up.

That is exactly what I wanted to hear. I was hoping to produce dark brown babies with thin lemon yellow band like the sire. My plan is to take these another generation F3 and then mix in some BEB, but when these hatched I was not sure of what I had.

Thank You very much!

No problem. sounds like a cool project. I'd like to see a BYB with that BB pattern.

I have wholesaled over a thousand double and triple het cal kings of just about every combination out there in the past......even double hets for BEB & Hypermelanisim (Mendotas).

I have joked on here for years that some surprises are going to pop out of no where........and they are starting to occur.

Not saying that I am responsible for this situation, but it is possible.
