Is it feasable to get Sulcata with out a yard?? More inside..

jusmebabe Sep 30, 2003 04:00 PM

Hey everyone,
i am interested in getting a baby Sulcata. I own several herps presently so not new to them.
My questions are:
Are most Sulcata owners home owners?
I ask as there seems to be many but not everyone has a back yard (myself).
Due to there adult size is it not possible to house them indoors?
I have experience with different torts and turtles but seem to enjoy there personality and quirkiness the most.
I own a condo with a nice size balcony but that's it lol.
Should i rule a Sulcata out since i don't have a yard?
Thanx for your input and for the record not interested in other torts at this time..

Depending on how fast it grows and how long you plan on staying in a condo will determine if a sulcata is for you.
In the first 5 years they can grow at a rate of 2 to 20 pounds. That is you can have a tortoise that is either 2 or 20 pounds after 5 years. Now, consider that personality... They are very active/destructive. Considering this, you will eventually most likely have to reinforce the drywall in the room that you will have to allocate to the 'little' guy.
To answer your question... yes you can keep a sulcata in a condo. The next question is do you really want to bear the expense that is involved? It is your choice.

I didn't know how destructive they could be although it would be a room to itself i think i will wait for the wife and i to afford a house in the very high cost of living state of Cali lol..

A agree with Ed. It is NOT impossible just something which requires a great deal of fore thought and planning and a bit of $$. Perhaps a smaller more manageable tort might be the answer though I must confess sulcatas areadorable. It is their blessing and their curse. Folks melt when they see the little babies and Freak out when their baby leaves huge "Meadow Muffins" in the living room and burrows through the wall.

If I ever make my move to California -- I want a herd of 'em.

I would basically say probably not, I have my big 32 lb sulcata indoors right now (i'm in ohio) becasue its getting to cool outside for him, and he really isn't liking it, if you give them enough room they might do ok, but don't keep them cramped up, my big guy has almost a whole bedroom and he still don't think he likes it much, he seems happy but he still is always looking for ways to get out, sure it can be done, but a backyard is almost needed, just my opinion
