light disturbance question

lele May 26, 2003 09:00 PM

Hi all,

I had not thought about this before until some post came up re: free roam cham setups. Someone pointed out that this person needed to make sure that lights were left off or not turned on later at night b/c it could disturb the chams once they were asleep.
So, here is my situation: My chams, tarantula, plants and other pet spiders are all in my office (I work at home) and sometimes, like now, the grow lights went off (on timer) but I am still working at my computer and usually would turn a light on to see.

I know pygmies can get by with low light and the only reason they are under the grow lights is b/c of my plants. Soon they (plants) will go outside and the light will be off until fall. Of course their basking light will still be used and they will get a lot of natural light just b/c of their location. Tarantula's don't like much light at all so she always has a covering on part of her home - can I do that with the pygmies if I need to put the lights on? How much of a disturbance is it?

well, as always, thax and sorry for the long post

from my experiance, the lights are not a huge problem .. when my chams are asleep and i am just checking something in the room, they usually sleep right through it ... if the light is on for an extended period of time, so that your chams wake up, this can pose a problem ... your chams could start acting lethargic, and that is never a good thing
i hope this helps

lele-

If after the main light on over the cage goes off, and you have other lights in the same room on it can disturb the chameleons. If you notice after the lights go off and they don't close their eyes and sleep after a while, then the light in the room is disturbing them. If this is the case, you can use a towel to cover the front of the cage up, to block the light! Hope this helps!
