Billy the Exterminator?

DiamondFlame10 Jul 20, 2011 03:58 PM

Anybody watch?

Funniest thing.... we were watching season 3 and Billy found a ball python. He didn't refer to it as a ball python... just a python. He then continues on to talk about how it could be somebody's pet, or an offspring from somebody's escaped pet. He talks about how pythons can grow to be 23 feet long... and how people buy little babies and don't realize how big they can get... That's great but he didn't talk about the fact that THAT snake, will NOT get 23 feet, but grouped ALL pythons as these HUGE KILLERS. He also talked about the fact that people release them into the wild and they become a HUGE problem because they get SO big...

As much as the information was "ok", I feel he should have properly informed his client that it was a ball python and it just seemed like he instilled more fear in the watchers. Better entertainment I suppose!

I get that crap all the time.
"You breed pythons? Aren't you afraid they will eat you?"

First off...I'm a big dude. (5'8", 375 lbs. Working on losing it...but still, I'm big)
I'm fairly sure NO snake on Earth currently...could eat me.

Second...the general populace is ignorant.

I don't get whatever station it was on when it aired years ago, but I found it on Netflix last month and watched them all. I was dumbstruck over the things he said about the ball python. So much so I actually looked up their website last month and emailed them to explain how the things he was saying as "fact" were so far off from the truth. I did it in a nice way. Did not get a response...

Lyn...I also was so outraged at incorrect information being given on nearly every episode that I made contact to someone on the website. You never know who gets that info and if they give a sh** or not. I never heard anything either.

Billy is an exterminator and he should stick to that....he does NOT know reptiles! When you call a water snake a moccasin or vice versa....THAT'S A BIG MISTAKE in my book.

SlytherLyn Jul 21, 2011 04:45 PM

The other one that had me dumbfounded was when he caught a corn snake, and even said "it's a Corn Snake" then proceeded to handle it with extreme care while he examined it's eyes and tail scales to determine if it was venomous, even though he knew it was a Corn Snake, he apparently didn't know if corns were venomous or not...

To his defense, I really liked that he didn't just kill the snakes, even if it was a venomous one he would find a good safe place to release it. And that he knew enough not to go release the ball python back to the "wild" and even seemed to genuinely like it and want to keep it as a pet. While he might not have his facts straight, he did genuinely seem to care about wildlife to the point where he was even taking care to free mice from the glue traps so he could release them...

I first recall seeing him on Dirty Jobs, yearrrrrs ago.

He didn't look so outrageous. His mullet was only half as ridiculous as it is now.

From that grew his A&E show.

From IDing cornsnakes as copperheads, to his allergic-to-bees co-worker being stunk IN THE NOSE*, the guy is an absolute joke.

*So buddy gets stung inside his nose, and he's allergic to bees. A moment of panic and chaos ensues. It's short-lived, and we never learn what became of buddy's bee-stung-nasal cavity.

I'm no Doctor, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night, and bee stings in the nostril seem a tad bit hazardous to someone claiming to be ALLERGIC to bee stings.

Mind you, I hate reality TV, so perhaps I'm biased towards Billy The HalfWit.

Apart from The First 48, the whole genre of reality TV is deserving of the trashcan.

*steps off soapbox* LOLOLOL

While some might consider a show about real homicide investigations is in bad taste, I think it serves an educational purpose.

Show The First 48 in some high school classes and maybe some of these young folks would learn respect for life and see the repercussions of hasty decisions and short-sighted solutions.

*Once more steps off his soapbox*

Happy Herping!!

kids wouldn't learn anything from showing them dead people or dead anything....even making them actually kill something and clean it...not a rabbit, a ...like horse....yea...big...

...they still would be stupid....and go to jail....people are stupid...

as for ball pythons....

same people...

LOL

I agree. Anyone who has had any training in Wildlife Damage Management cringes when watching this show. I saw an episode where he tore out a woman's ceiling to remove a raccoon nest. When anyone who is educated on the matter would have tried Evictor Fluid first. And his "safety" equipment consisted of a bunch of goth clothing and a ski mask

We need to get freaks like this off of TV. I got bit by my newest BP last night and someone asked me today if I went to the hospital... they thought BPs are venomous...

I don't know what the hell you guys are talking about! You should ALWAYS wear steel studded shoulder pads when removing ants from a house!

ohernz Jul 22, 2011 05:09 AM

People's ignorance is appalling! My coworkers know I breed Ball Pythons. I talk about them all the time and I have showed a lot of pictures at work. Still many people keep asking me if I am not afraid they might grow so big that one day they might hurt me, or that if they bite me I'd have to go to the hospital.

People think that ALL pythons grow as big as Retics, and MANY people think that ALL snakes are venomous. Shows like this one contribute to the misinformation and the confusion. Of course the hype about the giant man-eating super snakes roaming the Everglades doesn't help either. Well, at least lately they have reduced the estimated number of pythons in the wild in South Florida. They used to say that there were at least 100,000 pythons in the Everglades. The latest I've heard puts their number in the 30,000.

Also, in all these shows about the "python invasion" they stress the "fact" that pythons don't have predators in the Florida swamps and have even showed another snake (can't remember if it was an indigo or a kingsnake) trying to kill and eat a baby reticulate python. The baby escaped, and they point out that baby retics don't have natural predators. as if all attempts of predation (by any predatory species) are always successful...

Baby pythons are a tasty morsel to many species in the Everglades. Snapping turtles, indigos, kingsnakes, alligators and crocodiles, even bullfrogs and largemouth bass, all kinds of birds like herons, storks, egrets, eagles, ospreys and hawks, and mammals like otters, racoons, and foxes would eat a baby python. Even adult pythons (maybe not the REALLY big ones) can be killed by alligators and crocodiles...

One of my bosses saw pictures of baby ball pythons I had posted on the wall of my cubicle at work, and say "Oh, so you are one of the people responsible for the pythons in the Everglades?" I had to stop him right there and tried to explain the REAL facts about pythons, and that I am not an irresponsible person that would NEVER release an exotic species to the wild, but I doubt he believed or understood me (He is an a***ole anyway).

Lately I've been watching these "python hunter" type shows from down in Florida b/c I think they're entertaining as crap! And they are consistently warning the public of dangerous escaped pet pythons that could be baby killers (ie. African Rocks)

BUT THEY USE STOCK FOOTAGE OF BALL PYTHONS!!! HAHAHAHAHA

its kinda funny, but seriously, talk about misrepresenting facts to an ignorant public!

frustrating........

snakemansnakes Jul 22, 2011 12:42 PM

Where can I find the ball python episode?

jack2682 Jul 22, 2011 05:25 PM

I can't remember which capturing everglades pythons show it was....I think it was a special about the fear of the burm x Af. Rock hybrid that will eat everything....

ssnakes Jul 24, 2011 09:08 AM

The guys in the Python Hunter series are all reptile breeders....two of them are major ball python breeders. I would not think they would make such a mistake as showing ball pythons in reference to larger pythons like burms or retics. These guys KNOW SNAKES and they know the difference between balls and burms.
