Prolapsed Oviduct - Advice Please

Beaker30 Jul 23, 2011 08:50 AM

My last female laid her clutch yesterday. When I took her out of the nest box, she has a prolapsed oviduct with the final egg still in behind it. I rinsed of the sphagnum with cool water and put her on paper towels. Any advice on how to help her? Thanks.

I had one do this and I took a sexing probe and popped the eggs one by one and pulled them out with tweezers. I then gently pushed her insides back in and she is doing great and eating like a pig!

Well, you can do what was suggested very carefully as for rupturing the egg, but as for pushing the insides back in... Its best to just soak up the insides with some high concentrated sugar water and they tend to go back in on their own or after they are saturated with water its safer to put them back in.

My corn snake did that twice in 2010 while laying a large clutch of eggs. I took her to a reptile vet both times, and he put it back in. I don't know how he did it. Now I wish I had insisted on watching.

Maybe others will post regarding whether or not it will be safe to breed her again. With mine, I decided to retire her, and gave her to a friend.
