One Super-size Desert Cali

Pit_fan Jul 24, 2011 04:11 PM

Hey everyone, it's been awhile since I've been over here in the kingsnake section - as I only have one. Thoroughly enjoy looking at everyone's hatchlings as I can appreciate all the work and time that goes into a successful hatch.

Here's a male desert Cali at the other end of the size and age range for the species, one that I have had for a LONG time (he's 11 now and fully 72" long). He is, quite literally, the KING snake.
Thanks for lookin...

With me for size reference...

and hanging out in his domain...

That is one huge Cal king. Years ago they had one just like it at the Living Desert Museum in Palm Desert CA. At first I thought that was the same one. The whole scene in the background looks like that museum but I realized you said the snake was only 11 years old and I seen this snake back in 1992. Yours is only the second one I've ever seen that big.

Thanks,

This animal was given to a small zoo (Luray Zoo) in western Virginia in 2004 by his original owners who no longer wanted him. Being good friends with the owners and frequent visitors, they brought out this beautiful four foot king one night while we were there and asked my youngest son if he wanted it. He looked back at me for confirmation and I enthusiastically gave him the nod. That king has been in our care ever since. We all live in southern AZ now.

Good stuff, I have an adult male albino that hatched in 2004 that is probably around 5 feet now. He's a little younger than yours so maybe he'll catch up one day.

If they stay healthy and are fed reasonably well, they continue to grow. A five footer is a respectable size for a desert king. Hope yours makes it to six!

With the risk of critizism I will say.

I wish I had one that big! LOL!

That is an outstanding looking king, 6ft and thick. I'll bet that weighs over 1500 grams. I have a mexican black that's 5ft and the same girth as yours and it weighs over 1300 grams.

Never thought of getting his weight. As he just fed last night, I will wait until at least next weekend to put him on the balance.

Here she is last October. Since that picture was taken she's gained about 100 more grams.

mbrawley Jul 27, 2011 12:24 PM

Thanks for the pic. She is a damn fine mbk.

mbrawley Jul 25, 2011 11:13 PM

Damn. That's a big Cal King. Holy crap.

Thank you for sharing that freakishly large, freak of freakin nature with the rest of us. A very awesome, and beautiful, freak of nature, indeed.
