popping baby brb

matt7465 Jul 24, 2011 04:12 PM

I had 2 litters born this month and have never attempted (hemipene) popping them before. I have been shown and seen it done on several occasions but am very green at this. I have attempted this on several of my animals (10-12) I am seeing a difference, what appears to be a boy is popping out a (few mm) with a purple color or streak. the other just look like to little lumps with yellow in them which I assume is female. Do brbs typically fully extend when popped? Any tips? I am tired of bleeding with very little results. I will need a transfusion before long. These little dudes love to bite, they really like that soft tissue on the under side of your arms. Gotta love it. thanks in advance as I have no where else to turn.
Matt

BTW, the gif is on a BCI but I use the same technique on my BRB's as well.

I agree with Dave. Palpation is my preferred method of sexing snakes.

I just do not have sensitive enough fingertips to accurately palpate baby Rainbow Boas. When they get bigger it IS much easier for me. I bred colubrids for years and popping is a great method to sex them. BRBs of all sizes, even the babies have too much muscle in their tails for easy and accurate popping. Some will pop but many do not and so males get misidentified as females. I still find that at least for me probing is the most acurate method of sexing baby Rainbow Boas. I reduce the bites by suspending them by their tails and lightly pinning their bodies between my legs while probing them. Be sure to wear long pants doing this.
