cross habitat question

cowgirl3275 Sep 30, 2003 06:44 PM

I am sorry to bother you but I had a question about habitation of some reptiles... I have received a spur thigh torqoise and I also have a leopard gecko. I was wondering, since the climates seem similar and if I provide adaquate housing for both in a large aquarium, would it be possible to house them both together without cause harm to either animal. The spur thigh is newly hatched.. it isnt anymore then 3 months old. I plan on building a pen to accommadate its groth. However, since it is so small still I was curious if mixing species would cause problems or conflicts. Thank you for your time.

Respectfully yours,
Sam

It is not a good idea for many reasons to keep a lizard and a chelonian in a restricted habitat. The main concerns are damage to the lizard and there is a chance of cross contamination or disease. Both animals carry bugs/parasites that can kill the other. Even in captive raised animals I've seen these parasites crop up. If you can provide a huge habitat setup you might be able to get away with it though.
