Breeding every year?

ohernz Jul 26, 2011 06:32 AM

Is it safe to breed females every year? I usually give them a break and breed them every other year. My son is very reluctant about putting them to breed every year; he says that it's very stressful on the females, going off food for the gravid period, and losing calcium for the eggs shells. I say that if they are well fed, they can be bred every year. Even if they don't breed, most females go on a hungry strike during the breeding season anyway...
Any input?

IMO, your son is spot on. I breed every other season myself.

One thing to consider, the girls have a say-so in this thing too ya know! If they're not in optimum health and they're body can't handle it, they won't cooperate! That being said, if I felt a girl hasn't bounced back well enough, I'll hold her back!

i think that pretty much covers it. they know if they should/want to breed or not. if they are healthy enough to handle it, they will. if they know they cant, they wont.

if this weren't the case, there would be a million threads on 'omg my gravid female died before/right after laying eggs'. and i can't really say i have seen many if any of those
