Male vs Female prices

snakeeyes1618 Jul 26, 2011 06:46 AM

Why is it that Males seem to be cheaper than Females?

I see hets and Visual animals where the Male is cheaper. Isnt the genetics just as strong? 100% Het male will produce the same outcome as a 100% Femle wont it?

Thanks

It depends on factors like the mutation type and how long the mutation has been out but generally demand is less for males because most breeders only need one. In order to produce more babies they just need to buy extra females, not additional males because the first male they bought can breed several females.

I am going to be producing 100% het albinos and that is kind of what i was refering to.

Thank you for your explaination....that makes perfect sense to me and totally wasnt thinking along those lines.

My view on the recessive and het females vs males price difference was that if you bred multiple males to a non-recessive female any offspring wouldn't be a guarantee 100% because you couldn't be sure which snake fathered the clutch, however, if you bred multiple males to a recessive female, regardless of what hatches all would be het. Then again that's just my reasoning behind it.

Don't forget also that females take longer to get up to breeding size so I think you also factor into time and overhead cost into the price of females..at lest for older ones anyway.
