Vietnamese Beauties and the great ourdoors

kick_baal Sep 30, 2003 07:27 PM

In keeping with the "Help my [blank] got out" threads, here's mine. I had my 6 Vietnamese blues outside in two 1/2 inch mesh 3'x6'x3' cages for the Summer and everything was fine until a squirrel decided to chew a hole in the bottom of EACH CAGE!!!

ARGHHHH!!! I found one (a male) immediately and another one (female, of course) run over right in front of my house. I've been looking in shrubs and lower branches when the day is warming up to not avail. My question is should I be looking on the ground under mulch or high up in trees? I really never noticed that they had a preference in the time I've had them. Anyone who know their habits in the wild?

Too bad that damned squirrel isn't in one of their bellies. Best of luck to you.
I'd check in the darkest of places. If your house is pier-and-beam, look underneath. If it has a cellar, look there. Sorry I can't be of more help.

...and I think to myself, "What a wonderful world."

I would definatly say to look up when you are searching. When out of the cage, mine seem to head up on what ever is closest instead of cruising the floor.
I think a semi aboreal species such as Taeniura tend to go up more when they are more nervous than usual and in a unfamiliar area espicially when they are not just out looking for a meal.
I would of course also check the ground as you go and in the best hiding places that are close to your house.
I can just imagine some guy down the street from you out working in his yard one day that half way knows his local snakes. All of a sudden one of those blues comes cruising by him and he will be going,"what the hell it that". When he tells some of the neighbors they will think he has been hitting the bottle a little hard.
Good Luck, Randy Whittington

Yeah, it could be interesting if they prove to be cold hardy - I'm in Atlanta, GA. One thing I noticed last year is that they are active and alert in the mid-50s. In fact, I fed them at those temps a couple of times because I honestly didn't realize how cool it was in my snake room. They digested everything just fine and begged for more. Weird, huh?
