Maternal Incubation & Feeding

I keep stumbling over some misinformation about maternally incubating snakes and wanted to clear something up.

Brooding moms can, will and do eat while incubating their clutches and those that feed consistently throughout this period will gain weight and can be ready to breed again the following season. You may need to downgrade to a smaller sized meal if your girl was previously feeding on very large prey items. Some moms may eat every offered meal while on eggs. Others may feed more sporadically and only eat every other meal offered and occasionally there may be a female that takes several weeks to resume feeding. Nonetheless, if you're going to maternally incubate please don't withhold food from your females because you've been told or read that "they don't eat while brooding". I was misled by many books, reptile forums and fellow keepers before I realized that brooding females will, indeed, eat if food is offered.
