Are you from Ontario? Last summer I found a northern brown while roadcruising near Kingston, and I spent days searching for red-bellies in perfect habitat, and ended up finding one crawling out in the open after a rain near my lake. Ontario herping can be very frustrating when you aren't sure you are in the absolute perfect habitat. Demondog, where are you from in Ontario, and how did you find those browns? What was the habitat like? Thanks

I am in Halton hills ontario and i was mowing my lawn when i found the first guy running towards my house, the second one was in the cold at the pile of logs in my backyard and didn't move much. i did not go looking for these guys, haha seems if you look for them you can't find them. anyway i am in a kinda swampy area and i have a pond 5 bee hives and some random junk as well as the pile of logs from out pond lining that we dug up.....hope this helps, good luck

Red bellies are (supposed) to be real common (my students have found several). I used to see these (and catch em) by the handfuls as a kid.

Brown snakes are much harder to find here. A herper I met a few months ago was telling me they seem to be rarer than the local wildlife department thinks and finding some is like an early christmas. I've only ever seen one...a young adult that I caught when I was 8 or 9.

The strange thing is I live right next to a huge field area comeplete with a couple vernal pools, light woodlands, lots of brush, close to a small river, etc etc. Amzaing environment for any snake. But I've yet to find anything.

I go up to greenfield from time to time. Any place you might suggest to look around?

Thats pretty cool you've seen wood turtles. I've only seen one of those in my life....

Thank you for sharing, Rouen. I grew up in Connecticut and Massachusetts, and your pics allowed me to relive some herping memories. I've been away for 10 years, and although I enjoy the native herps here, the first snake I ever saw was a garter that lived in a stone fence in our yard--I was about 2.5 at the time, and was fascinated. Happy herping!
Regards,
althea
