It would depend on where you are located. If you are in a dry/warm climate I would use a swamp cooler to increase humidity and cool the room.
If you are in a Warm climate with mild winters (30*-40*) then I would use a Mitsubishi Mini-split Heat pump for efficency and savings.
If you are in the frozen tundra I would install Infloor heat with a gas boiler. The a/c is optional and will only be used for a few days a year.
Either way, INSULATE the crap out of the room for energy savings!!
I have been doing heating and air since 2003 as my primary job and have worked accross the entire US. Each region has its own requirements.
I hope this helps a bit?!

I am in Cleveland, TN. The room is only going to be a 12'x12', or a 12'x16'. My company actually does insulation as well. So I'm going to overkill the insulating!!
I just want a 220 wall unit that heats and cools. I will have a small gas heater as a back up for winter.
Go with the Mitsubishi mini split... I installed one for a friend up here in MN and he has nothing bad to say about it!!
Good Luck!

Be careful some wall a/c's with a digital control go off when the power blips, and don't reset. A friend had one here in Florida, the power blips all the time. When power would blip the a/c quit and didn't restart. It was for his rodent room, he would come home after work to find very hot rodents. I bought one from LG it is digital but doesn't have the problem that my friend's unit did.
Good to know!! Thanks Mike!

I have heard the same about the digital ones not cutting back on after a power outtage. We have an LG digital heating and cooling unit on the rat room and it does fine. Is there any exact models any of you would recommend? Digital or manual (or whatever the term is for not digital)?
Hook it up to a Controler, like a helix or johnston may be.
Just something to restart it and control it if needed.
