Black and Pink?

Jlassiter Jul 28, 2011 06:01 PM

Maybe one day but for now here are the ones that will start it all......
The first one emerged last night and it's a male......Which is good......The second (and last) will emerge soon....Hope it's a female, but another male will work too as I can line breed in both directions (one for pink and one for black) and cross their babies back to each other.....LOL

I can't wait until these grow up and go through their ontogenesis......

Here are some pics.....
Check out how light the red is compared to normal Mex Mex hatchlings with almost maroon saddles.......And look at that head pattern on the pipper......

Yep Joe.....Both the black gene and the Hypo-E gene are ontogenetic. They look like normals when they hatch......The Blacks' ground color darkens from gray to black with age and the Hypoerythristics saddles lighten from red to pink....

Classic (normal) phenotypes hatch out with dark crimson colored saddles normally that lighten to the nice fire engine red......

These Hypoerythristics hatch out with red saddles that lighten to pink/salmon and even so far the females' saddles turn a different shade of pink.....lavender almost.....lol Again...I don't know if this is dimorphic either....it's a hypothesis...

Now....I don't know if the Hypo-E gene is codominant or dominant or what....More breeding trials are in order, but I can bet you a beer these two are Hypo-E.....Now the wait to see if they will turn black as well......

I will certainly take some pics from time to time to show the ontogenesis......

Here are some pics of the Hypo-E pair I have when they were young.....

And here they are now......
MALE:

FEMALE:

And here are the parents to these two neonates:

I agree Joe..........I can't wait to see a single animal that darkens it's ground color and lightens it's saddle color.........if it's possible........we shall see......

Very cool John,.....already fairly dark, and will no doubt darken up substantially as it matures.

Good luck with the projects.

Thanks Doug......
I hope you are right Doug, because I am pretty certain that their saddles will lighten up to pink......

The male is VERY Dark.......I wonder since it was bred to a mate that has a light colored ground color if they would produce "inbetweeners".......Ya know, kinda like going backwards in a line breeding project or outcrossing.......

The second one just emerged and it is a male too so I plan on breeding one male to a black female and one male to a hypo-e female to see if I can refine it to the point that, as an adult, a dark black mex mex will have light pink saddles.

We'll see....Thanks for wishing me luck....
