Sorry, they did appear the next time I looked. Must have been a glitch on my end.

Hey John, what are the chances of a hatchling actually coming out melanistic from this line? The first female pictured, you can tell these are hets! Well just speculating =)

Well...There is some controversy over whether or not the gene is actually a recessive gene or not........Many folks have bred Mel X Mel and hatched out all Melanistic babies, but one breeder claims to have normals hatch out of a Mel X Mel pairing.....
For now I won't call them hets but sometimes it slips and I do.....I think it is a recessive trait or at least one line is.....So...if it is recessive these babies are 50% het......because the Sire had a melanistic parent. That makes him 100% het...?...... and the Dam was a normal, but nice Rose colored leonis........
And yes....Some "hets" are visual hets in my opinion......The ones I have from Shannon are from a melanistic parent and their ventral scales are mostly black...plus they have an overall darker look to them......Expressing a little above normal melanin per say.........

John, that is strange that one mel x mel pairing had normal looking babies and the other pairing had mel babies.
I guess a good way to find out is when one baby hopefully female mel comes out and bred back to the mel sire then it will be very interesting the second the hatchlings are pipping! You would think that this was in the category of hypo, albino, anery........melanistic?! I guess more results, research need to be done about it.
When I was young, I used to think that if an animal was 50% het for albino for example then half of the babies would be albino lol!
Very interesting John! I guess you get the pleasure of finding out huh? And hopefully you get a mel coming out of one of the eggs...=) I'm even crossing my fingers

Well....I've tried for the last two years with Shannon's 2.1 melanistic Thayeri (Lemke line) and have yet to figure out how to get them to reproduce.......I even bred the males to 2 different "het" females and got all slugs, but when I used the "het" male on a normal female I got eggs.......I don't know if the Black males have fertility issues or not, but I am going to try again next year with a few adjustments......
And I am thinking of pairing up the 1.1 "hets" too......Maybe we'll get some MSPs, Leonis and Mels all in one clutch........

do they turn black?

Morphs... just like baseball cards BUT ALIVE, how cool is that???

>>do they turn black?
No sir.....Melanistics hatch out almost black and turn black within a couple sheds......Unmistakeably.......
These stay like they are now just as all thayeri......but they all go through some ontogenesis....

well thats cool, it seems their black is a bit more pronounced than other thayeri ive seen, i guess???
being melanistic lineage are they hets?

I think when they (tried) to line breed to Melanistic they are (kind of) stuck with wild type retro thayeri look. Reduced black is a recessive trait, so in essence you have a double recessive (if that's what the Melanistic is).
I think you can prove it either way, you'd just have to out breed to a reduced black every time you get a Melanistic. So far that has been easier said then done for most folks.

LOCALITY: Traceable lineage to WC snakes from the same locality.
I don't care how far apart they are (within reason) as long as the localities are stated, buyers can make up their own minds.
NON-LOCAL or GENERIC: Lineage is not traceable to WC
Generics need love too.
simple
I THINK...... that line breeding for recessive also resulted in an (unintentional) line breeding for wild type / retro look thayeri.

If it WERE a simple recessive trait they would be 50% hets.......
I am going to breed a pair of siblings together next year.....They both have a melanistic parent.......I wonder if we'll get some melanistic babies.....25% of them should be melanistic........
