Questions about Hatching Bull Snakes

pyromaniac Aug 01, 2011 06:02 PM

If bull snake eggs were laid June 2 when should they hatch? (Stillwater x Kingsville) Incubated at between 78 and 83.5 F, mostly 80.5 F.

How hard is it to get baby bull snakes started eating? (only experience is with pyros; got them to eat but was somewhat challenging with a couple)

Is it safe to house baby bull snakes together? Have small separate tubs but if they can all go in one big tub that would be nice.

Will Stillwater x Kingsville babies come out looking like the parents who are from a mating of a Kingsville and a Stillwater, or will I get a variety of colors?

- They hatch after approx 60 days
- I offer mine dead fuzies after they shed and most eat without any problem. Some prefer live prey.
- I keep all my babies each in their own box, but I think it must be possible to keep them together in 1 box and to just separate them at feeding time.
- Your babies will look like a mix of the colors of both parents.

Thanks, John!
I always feed outside the cage in a separate container, although I do feed live for the most part, until the mice get big enough to bite, then I prekill the prey.

There's still no bulletproof algoritm to predict the exact number of days, but generally about two months will do, depending on factors such as temperature, humidity, size, etc..

"How hard is it to get baby bull snakes started eating? (only experience is with pyros; got them to eat but was somewhat challenging with a couple)"

Not hard at all. In fact, right after their first ecdysis they'll all be feeding like there's no tomorrow. Powerfeeding is not something I would recommend though.

"Is it safe to house baby bull snakes together? Have small separate tubs but if they can all go in one big tub that would be nice."

Bullsnakes do not show any cannibalistic tendencies in any stage of their lives, so that would be yes. Solitary confinement is always the best way to go, but if you are keeping them together, just be sure not to overcrowd your tubs, as this may stress the little buggers. About 4 little Bulls in a big tub will do just fine. But remember to feed them seperately, or you definately risk losing some of them eventually.

Take a wild guess.

Oh, alrighty then. A variety, off course.

Thanks!
Like I said to John, I always feed my snakes in separate containers. I would like to house them together otherwise, in one of my big 105 quart tubs. I expect six babies.
So far no pips and it is day 63. My pyro eggs took 70 days to start hatching. I candled the eggs this morning and could see red veins and an air space, then below that some sort of dark matter which I am assuming is a baby snake.

My experience is that Bulls from more northerly locales hatch at around 48-55 days whereas those from further south go around 59-65 days. I hatch animals at temps of approximately 78-82 Degrees F. They're easy to get going and I always house my Pituophis separately as some can be quite aggressive when feeding, possibly intimidating their siblings/ cage mates. Hope this is of help.

Today is day 65 and one egg has pipped! These are Kingsville x Stillwater bulls, so pretty much southern.

I will house them separately, as that makes it easier to keep track of health issues.

They were more out of the egg, like the whole head, but when I took the photo they withdrew some.
