northern pines

majinchip Aug 01, 2011 09:12 PM

I am by now means a snake expert and know very little about pines/bulls and gopher snakes so i hope this isn't a redundant question.I've seen a few albino northern pines for sale. now i knowthat there has been albino southern pines for a while. so my question is, are the northerns crossed with southern to produce albinos or has a true northern albino been found/hatched? also, where are black pines natural regions? are they a dark phase of a northern or southern or have thier own geographical range?

I'm not into the albino thing or other morphs for that matter, but I do recall being offered albino Northerns long before I had heard about albino Floridas, aroung 1988 if memory serves me correctly. As for Black Pines they are their their own subspcies, Pituophis melanoleucas lodingi, and are found in extreme southern Alabama and Mississippi. In terms of genetics and scalation they are virtually identical to Northerns and when first discovered were considered by some to be a dark phase Northern. It's range is distinct, was made a full species in 1920 and was assigned subspecific status by Blanchard in 1924.
