New book 'The Northern Pine Snake'

DanielsDen Aug 03, 2011 04:18 PM

Just received (yesterday) the new book entitled 'THE NORTHERN PINE SNAKE.' The book is way over priced and lacks a lot of sceintific data. It deals only with the pine snakes of NJ and does not include any information concerning northern pines of any other area. It only contains 80 pages of general information. In my opinion, it is about $30.00 over priced.

Ya, I agree! Got a copy yesterday and was disappointed by the limited scope, limited info and lackluster style. Modern writers of scientific/conservation bent just don't create good reads anymore. No anecdotals, no fun! And what's with digging snakes out of hibernacula and nest sites on any scale? There are better, less destructive, less invasive techniques than permanently destroying sites. But that's just my opinion.

As for interesting and somewhat informative snake reads, there's Carl Kauffeld and then there is everyone else. I thought Mara did a good job with his 1994 book but we are past due for a really nice update on the taxa.

And not to be totally insensitive to a popular (to many here) but imperiled species, but these is little to inspire the reader aside from the gloom and doom forecast and all the myriad of threats and issues. OK, I done.

I also felt ripped off for the price they charged. When I saw the price tag I gladly paid thinking ok, I was going to get something along the lines to similar priced books. Instead I get this little booklet that has some information but some of it so badly vague! Was also very unimpressed for what I paid for. But on the other hand I'm glad I picked it up. But sadly if your looking for information on Northern Pines, just google it and print up the information you find...

Hi Dan

As far as I remember:

This little book is chapter 1 of a bigger book of multiple authors.

Zappalorti and Burger wrote it not to publish it in a single book.

But they got the chance to put it too in an own book and so they did.

This book is only printed in small numbers - and this increases
the price hard.

For me this book is a must because it shows 30 years of continuous
work with this threatened genus in New Jersey.

I have to give 50 Dollar to get it to Germany.
But I will effort them.

For who it is too much - there is a free pdf online under
(See link at the bottom of this thread).

And it is online for minimum 2 month now ...
I mention it only for the people who are now astonished that is only such a little booklet …

Regards,

Bernd of www.pinesnake.de

Hey Bernd,
How's it going? You coming to the USA for the Daytona Expo or any other reptile show this year? I won't be able to make it to the Daytona Expo this year for the first time in about 10 years.
I still hope to make it over there for the Hamburg show sometime.
Take care.
