Maybe a stupid question...but

HeavenHell Aug 03, 2011 05:20 PM

I recently ordered a nice supply of mice from ARS which arrived today. The box arrived in good condition, but when I opened it I was surprise to see that two bags of medium mice had broken open with many of those mice coming in direct contact with the dry ice. So my question is, are these mice still safe to feed to my snakes? Has anyone else had this happen? Thanks.

I've never had that happen, but dry ice evaporates into a gas, so I don't think it would be a problem?

once I took it out front and put it in puddles and in the middle of the road on a rainy day....busy road...screwin with the drivers brains....

.....why not?.....

....I last time put it in my freezer to see what happens...it still disapeared overnight....I don't actually recomend doing this.....not sure what it does to the freezer itself....even if it saves a couple kilowatt hours of electricity.....or less...

Not a stupid question . . .

Dry Ice is a trade name for solid CO2 gas, which sublimates (turns directly from solid to gas state) at normal atmospheric pressure. CO2 does not penetrate or contaminate the mice in any way.

Do be careful, though, to not place the left-over Dry Ice in any tight space near tubs containing animals. CO2 gas is denser than air, so if there's enough of it present it can "spill" out of its container and flow downward to the point where the tight space fills up with CO2 gas and animals kept at lower levels can literally suffocate. That being said, kids (and adults) love to see Dry Ice put into glasses, bowls, etc. that contain water to simulate a "witches brew" effect, esp. around Halloween.

Have fun!
