is zoomed eco earth ok for kingsnakes?

airman_miller Aug 03, 2011 07:24 PM

i am wanting a mex mex, and want to know if zoo med eco earth is safe for king snakes. i have not really heard a definitive answer on the matter, only mentioned in passing. the only reason i ask is i have about 6 bricks that came with my setup. and i have ordered some aspen shavings to replace the eco earth (if usable) when it is gone. thank you in advance.

I don't know what eco earth is. But it sounds expensive.

i have been using pine shavings for years and never had a problem. if you have just a few snakes get the aspen bedding. Snakes love it and it is safe.

eco earth is a coconut fiber substrate. it is actually relatively cheap, about 8 bucks delivered for 3 bricks. 1 brick puts about an inch of substrate on the entire bottom of a 75 gallon tank.

i thought pine shavings were dangerous for kingsnakes?

"i thought pine shavings were dangerous for kingsnakes?"

It's only the very crude types of pine shavings with very sappy bark content that are bad. Cedar bedding is also very bad because of the aromatic oil it contains, and sappy pine is bad because pine sap is said to be very irritating to herps. Good quality kiln-dried substrate of aspen or pine is fine.

I have used ecoearth with my pyros and zonata and have no problems. I mix in some cypress mulch as well.

Its cheap and works great. It really cuts down any smell. The animals can swallow it with no problems. I like it for anything that needs a little humidity. Also, you can wash and reuse it.

so it is ok to wash it? do you just pull it out of the tank and rinse it all out?

GerardS Aug 03, 2011 11:12 PM

Yeah, rinse it all good and them spread it out and let it dry for a few hours. It looks nicer than aspen and works just as good if not better for certain species.

so a species like San Luis Potosi(mex mex) kingsnake would be ok? sorry to be asking so many questions.

GerardS Aug 04, 2011 01:13 PM

I have never kept that species. You may want to ask some of the other people here that work with them.
