The great escape.

Any tips on finding escaped snakes?

I was showing my hatchling corns and 1.1 coxi to my sons friend and left to take a phone call, never went back to put the lids on the tanks.

One hatchling was gone the next am and the male coxi was gone also. Snake room is in my finished basement and is adjacent to the laundry room.

So far extensive searching has turned up nothing. There are a few spots in the snakeroom were there are gaps between the carpet and baseboard. I fear they have gotten in the wall.

My wife knows there is a hatchling gone because she also checks up on them. She doesn't know about the coxi. And I'm not telling her.

Thanks

there are a few tricks but none have worked for me. If I have one escape it's simply a matter of "will it show up some day or will it find a way out?"
I've had several escape over the years and have never actually found one while searching. Had a few show up weeks, even months later but never had any of the tricks or thorough searches pay off.

good luck

I can only tell you what has worked for me! First of all,if you can, close off the room of the escape.Use duct tape sticky side up in about 1 ft. sections and place it close to the base boards of the room at several ft. intervals. You can also make traps out of small water/soda bottles by cutting the tops off and inverting like a minnow trap, secure the end with scotch tape. These work good in corners or you can use boxes and other things to "corral' them into the trap! Here's a pic of a trap! Good luck! Jeff

I was wondering about the pic....LOL
I've got too many escape routes I never have any luck finding them.
I'm glad the traps worked for you Jeff. Hopefully they can work for the OP.
Those two everglades weren't hypo were they?
The hypo everglades you posted over on the rat snake forum is incredible.

Thanks.

I have the tape down and am working on the bottle traps.

Do you think it would help to bait them with a pinky?

cochran Aug 05, 2011 09:21 PM

A pinky could be a good idea! But,do check the tape and traps regularly!! If one gets stuck on the tape you can use vegetable oil and Q-tip to free them!! Jeff

Sorry to hear about your escapes. Especially the Coxi! My suggestion to you and anyone with a snake collection is to make the room you keep them in as escape proof as possible. I have a very small snake room but I have sealed of any escape routes either with expanding foam, or peel and stick insulation, like around the doors. Any small cracks and crevices should be at least taped if nothing else. i know this doesn't help you now, but I have had many escapes, and finally learned. Now if I have an escape, I don't panic cause I'm pretty sure he's still in the room. Good Luck!

That's a good idea.

My wife found the hatchling today in my sons wet swimsuit that he had tossed on the laundry room floor. This room is right next to the snakeroom and I'm betting the coxi is in there also.

I haven't had any luck with the tape and bottle traps but I'm going to set some wet towels near some likely hiding spots and hope the coxi curls up in one.

The bad part is since the hatchling was found I had to tell her the coxi was gone to explain why we still needed the traps out.
