Mouse Eaters!

mrkent Aug 06, 2011 09:35 PM

As I posted below, four of my 4 week old alternas had their first meal of live anole Thursday night. Those same four each ate a second live anole this afternoon, followed by chain-fed f/t pinkies. Each hesitated slightly, then kept on eating.

Here are pic of a couple of them, with the anole tails still visible as they eat the pinkies.

The other six are still not interested, but I will leave live anole with them tonight.

Just another week or two until my second clutch hatches, probably while I vacation in New Mexico. Fun times!

Yes it is, for those four. Now to get the other six going. I will try again in a few days, then I am off to NM for a week. I don't think my wife will be making any feeding attempts while I am gone, but she said she would feed the mice!

Maybe they'll take a f/t pinky, but I'd try a live pinky first.....Or an anole scented pinky........

If it makes you feel any better I have about 40 mex mex and thayeri that have shed and not eaten pinkies yet......LOL

And 5 freakin holbrooki......Not all getula are the hardy speciments everyone advertises......They are sometimes as bad as alterna and those freakin cornsnakes!.......lol

John (and all the rest of us who struggle with reluctant babies) TRY BULL SNAKES! My baby bull snakes ate right out of the egg! I thought I'd offer a live large pink to them on a whim, and they all wolfed it down right away. What a pleasant change from fussing with the kings (although all the pyros have now eaten)

Yes Bob I read your post about those bulls eating right out of the egg! Pretty amazing.

My first clutch starting hatching at day 72, and finished on day 74. So if the second clutch does the same, they will start hatching on the 20th, the day I get back.

My wife will be keeping an eye on things while I am gone, as she is unable to go with me. That means she will feed the mice, and check water bowls in the snake cages. The incubator temp is very stable, so she won't need to mess with the eggs unless they start hatching. I will have a cage ready for the babies so she can move any hatchlings out of the incubator.

Although she does not share my interest in snakes, she is not afraid to handle them. She does draw the line at feeding though!

Did you scent the pinks? Or just push them in behind?

By the way make sure to leave a good size water bowl in with the eggs when you go on vacation. Good Luck with the remaining ones!

I did not scent the pinkies, but did rinse them real well when thawing them. I just put the nose between the anole's back legs while the snake's mouth was still open wide, and held it there until the snake started swallowing it.

Here is one with a full stomach.

I have 4 days left in town before I leave, so I think Thursday evening I will try to feed them again. The eaters will get to try scented pinks first, then f/t anoles (with a pinky chaser) if that doesn't work. The non-eaters will get another try with live anoles.

If I put a water dish in with the eggs when I leave I am afraid it would raise the humidity too much. My wife will be checking on them, and will remove any that hatch to the cage I will have set up.

Thanks everyone!
