what sort of king can't kill a mouse?

varanid Aug 07, 2011 07:56 AM

Out my my most recent clutch I have 4 that haven't eaten so I tried live pinks instead of f/t. One ate, two refused, and one...well I'm not sure what to make of this other than I probably shouldn't sell this guy.

He coiled around the pinky like he was trying to kill it, and stayed that way a good minute or two. But I don't know if he couldn't squeeze tight enough, or couldn't figure out that he needed to squeeze tighter cause the pinky was still alive when he gave up and let go. He tried to bite the pinky but when it started shaking he let go quickly.
I handled him and he *can* move and explore but he doesn't coil as tightly as the others (they'll coil around my fingers as an anchor). I'm not sure if he's defective or what the deal is. Has anyone else witnessed a snake that seems unable to work out how to kill a mouse? I mean it sure looked like he was doing it right but the mouse wasn't dead (well, not till I gave it to a sibling).

Maybe give your special needs child a freshly killed pinky? Just to get him started with something he doesn't have to struggle with.

I am sure he will get the hang of it within the next few feedings. Maybe he got spooked a little?

Sounds like he just needs a kick start. Get a meal or two in him and he will act normal..

have you tried braining? Do you leave the pinky in with him overnight?

yes to both; the first feed, I brained a f/t pinky and put it in before I went to bed.

In my experience with corn snake hatchlings, it is not uncommon for them to squeeze like crazy, and still not kill the pinky. Usually they just eat it anyway. Like someone else said, he probably just got spooked and will get the hang of it.

Sorry, I meant to include the comment that I know that wasn't a kingsnake, but it is still a favorite pic since it is the first snake I hatched, back in 2004.

This will keep us on topic:
