Need a Latin/Scientific name on this snake (Chaco Swamp Snake) PIC

Reptile World May 26, 2003 09:45 PM

I am trying to find some of these snakes for my private collection. I got some in to sell last year and they sold very fast. I also saw some at a hamburg show last summer but didnt think to get any. Now I cant find them anywhere! I have been searching the net for weeks and finally I found a photo of one. I figure If I cqan get the latin name it may make the search easier. If you have any info on this speciesd please let me know. Thanks.

Mastigodryas bifossatus

This is a guess based on a photo in Snakes of South America, an old THF book by Marcos Frieberg. There's a pic of one eating a frog. The species is described in the more recent Venezula (checklist) book, so apparently it's latin name is still being used. Good luck finding info on South American herps. Not much available in English.

You may well be right. I found that animal in the Atlas. The drawing & description seem to match, however, it is called (in that book) a trpoical racer, & its habitat is described as dry. The range extends as far south as northern Argentina. I am not sure where exactly in Argentina the Chaco region is.

I believe it in the northern part of Argentina. the Gran Chaco is by definition a very dry place but does has a definitive wet season. Andy
