Florida Kingsnake wild caught breeders

lucy47 Aug 08, 2011 09:54 PM

I posted my male Pahokee King earlier and this is his mate. She is 3.5 feet and is not near as yellow as the male but I think she is great anyway. I snapped a new photo of one of their babies as well as reposting the male photograph. Anyone here keep regular Florida Kings?

Awesome snakes! And there are many others on here with w/c lineages...

Here is one of my females that I got back in 05. Old picture, but she is my favorite w/c that I have ever owned.

Thanks, love her! Here are a few 2010 Pairings... It was awesome to release all of the babies from my w/c stock last year back where I found/friends found some of these! That was the ultimate reword as a keeper/breeder...

The large female in this picture was caught gravid, and laid fertile clutches for 3 years in a row without any lockups. I put the males in for the pics, but that female never bred. I didn't even cool her for two of the three years and she still produced clutches (even double clutches) with retained sperm from a wild male!

That is amazing! I didn't think retained sperm could last that many seasons!

hey lucy47. that's a great looking florida king. i have a florida king too and i was wondering if you're experienced enough with them to judge my snake's age. you may need to have an account on [url ban] to see this picture but i'm hoping not.http://www.reptileforums.net/forums/showthread.php?84574-Hi-everyone!-New-to-the-forums-and-posting-picture-of-my-snake!&p=115730#post115730 (btw it's the first little one. i want to know his age because that's when i got him)

See..that is what I am talking about!!!

Completely sharp, solid, and contrasting colors on a Florida king adult!! That is stunning! That is what I like! To me, a lot of Florida king adults do not have as contrasting colors like that one there. I can see why it is one of your faves!

I almost picked up one very similar, in Daytona 2009 from Gourmet Rodent. Now after seeing your pic, I regret it! LOL!!

Here's a XXL (I believe was WC) male that I rescued about a year ago, from that dreaded petstore I visited recently. This guy is very beautiful - a classic Brooksi - but is SO wild and aggressive. He thrashes around and strikes everytime I even move around in front of the rack. And when I slide his tub open, he usually tries to come shooting out.

He was at this pet store for about a year before I got him. They were asking $100 for him. He was in a small cage and just looked so sad...so after checking in on him every few weeks for about a year, whenever I went in there to buy crickets, I finally made them an offer they couldn't refuse. 25 live mice. Which they would turn around and sell for $2 ea. So they made $50 on the snake, and were happy to take it cuz this guy was eating all of their mice! LOL.

I didn't tell them I only pay $.40 ea for my mice from another local breeder....do the math...I got a smokin deal and probably saved this snake's life!

He's the first couple of pics..then the last one is another "norm" that I love also

As you can see I too, am a proponent of "BONDING"

mbrawley Aug 09, 2011 04:47 PM

and one more for good measure...

lucy47 Aug 09, 2011 09:22 PM

Cool Kings. How big is the fiesty petstore King?

mbrawley Aug 09, 2011 09:38 PM

Hmmmm.....not sure. Although he depends on me, its kind of a love/hate relationship we have. I love him, but he hates me. So I don't mess with him much and pretty much just leave him alone. He gets really stressed whenever he sees me. LOL! But to answer your question more directly, I would estimate he's right around 5', give or take. He has a very large head which would be indicative of his age, so I'm guessing he was a wc adult...maybe. In the neighborhood of 7-10 years?

Thanks for looking!

foxturtle Aug 10, 2011 11:41 AM

Unless you had good intel suggesting the Brooks was wild-caught, it's 99.9% probable to be captive-bred. Wild-caught brooks are exceptionally rare in the pet trade, and only a handful of people know how and where to find them these days, and most would not sell WC directly to the pet trade.

By comparison, probably thousands are captive-bred for the pet trade every year.

well I choose to tell myself I was lucky enough to come across a true, wc, Brooksi, taken from a cane field in south Dade County Florida, a long long time ago...even though I logically know and believe what you say is more likely the case. LOL!

COME ON MAN, DON'T RUIN IT FOR ME!!! Geez. hahahaha!!!

I don't think I have ever found a true Brooks in the cane fields either. They were much further south.

Awesome. I'd love to see how those turn out.

The first clutch of sand kings should hatch, and if their incubation time is any indication, the next 2 clutches should be out by the end of the week.

That is to say, the first clutch hatched mid last week while I was out of town. The others should be out in the next few days.

What you have Sand Kings out and about and no pics?

Lu

foxturtle Aug 11, 2011 12:06 PM

I just got back in to town, and I'm leaving again in a week, so I haven't had that much time to mess with them. They have all shed, so I will probably take pictures today.
