Since blizzards seem to be the rage today...

armiyana May 26, 2003 09:50 PM

here's an updated pic of the two little ones I hatched on 4/11 and 4/12/03.
The het is getting ready to shed, but her colors kinda pale to begin with. Just like her mom. She's speckled with black on a pale yellow and violet body.
The bliz is actually pretty calm. At least compared to any others I've seen in person and compared to her mom and dad. The het's still a spitfire tho and took me a while to get her calmed down for the pic.

So is your blizzard very aggressive too? I am looking for a tame leo, and I really like the blizzards, snows, jungles, and leusitics. I am not one for an aggressive leo though, and wouldn't be a good owner for one so I don't want to get a leo and be a bad owner, my 2 leos I have now are very tame and I love them to death. Just curious as to your 2 cents on the blizzards being aggressive. I was bitten 3 times today by a baby at the pet store. i really want her, but don't want her to be aggressive.

iluvblackfrancis May 26, 2003 10:14 PM

i promise you it wont be aggressive if you handle it regularly.

bmills May 26, 2003 10:27 PM

I will most likely pick it up tomorrow and just deal with it being aggressive for the time being. I will put my hand in the cage for a couple minutes daily for about a week and then start to try to handle it. I will do my best to make it non-aggressive. Hopefully it will calm down with me handleing it regularly. If not, then I will just have an aggressive leo and it will be loved just the same. One more question, right now it is all grey, not white, but it is only about 4 inches long. Is this normal? Also, they have it for $80, is this normal? After she gets bigger, can I put her in with my other 2 leos that I currently have in my 20 gallon long tank? I know to wait until she gets bigger because they are all suppose to be around the same size when you put them in together.

iluvblackfrancis May 26, 2003 10:33 PM

$80 is a little high, but pet stores near me sell normals for $50! and a lot of breeders still sell them for about $100. i think most blizzards are greyish when young, and of coarse you can put it in with your others when it is bigger.

bmills May 26, 2003 10:42 PM

I appreciate the help. $80 does seem high, but after talking with some others in cincinnati ohio, nobody has seen a blizzard in cincinnati yet, so she is a rarity here. I appreciate all your help, and if I do get her tomorrow, I will post it and let you know how it goes calming her down. Thanks again.

gotta figure that by the time you put shipping on an internet purchase, you're not gonna get one much cheaper than that(unless you buy it at a show)

armiyana May 26, 2003 10:47 PM

Do you even own a bliz?
Cause you seem to counter argue everyone that owns blizzards here and says that they are more aggressive than normal leos. Even the more experienced breeders.

I handled my blizzard regularly and he still goes to bite me when I pick him up sometimes. He stresses out almost every time and turns purple at some points because of it.

Saying that the leo will calm down when the majority of us disagree to some extent doesn't seem very good... =/
Especially since many of us that agree that it will be more aggressive do in fact own them personally.

armiyana May 26, 2003 10:49 PM

Sorry about that...
Your bliz is better than most of ours then I suppose

bradley May 26, 2003 11:14 PM

many breeders hear on the forums have handled their blizzards many times and they just won't become tame. I don't regularly handle my geckos, but when I do its never any different or when I do the weekly newspaper change. Your one of the lucky few that got a calm blizzard but odds are the one in the petstore won't. Theres always that chance that it will, just don't count on it.

Yea, I am going to stay away from the blizzard in the pet store. Most people have said they just aren't calm. I really appreciate all the help, I didn't want to make a mistake and get a very aggressive one, she will have a much better home with somebody who doesn't mind the aggressive ones. My 2 leos I currently have, an albino and normal, are very tame and run to my hand when I put it in the tank, I feed them by hand all the time. I am looking for a tame leo. If you know of anybody who has some snow, jungle, or some other designer geckos, please let me know. Thanks agian.

if you are looking for a gecko somewhat similar (using the term lightly) looking to a blizzard you might want to look into a patternless. in my experience most patternless have a very calm demenor... probably much like your other two and they are beautiful to boot, plus they are very reasonably priced and wont cost you an arm and a leg.... even for an extremely nice colored one. good luck

I mentioned that too!
Very similar! But not as aggressive as those bliz can be.

bmills May 26, 2003 11:43 PM

I appreciate the help. Do you know where I can get ahold of a patternless? Please let me konw.

armiyana May 26, 2003 10:41 PM

was VERY aggressive.
As an adult, he's not as aggressive, but he's VERY skittich and if you hold him for too long he will sill nip and bite at me as well as go from white to purple. He's not a very handleable gecko.

This baby is a bit better. She still gets a lil skittery from time to time. But she's not very old yet...

bmills May 26, 2003 10:43 PM

I have only heard people talk about these problems with blizzards. Is it just mostely seen in blizzards or all geckos? I konw my 2 leos are very calm, I have an albino and a normal.

armiyana May 26, 2003 10:57 PM

I have:
2.2.2 albinos, one female het albino
1 male bliz, 0.1.2 het bliz and the one hatchling bliz
3 female normals and 1 S.H carrot tail

My blizzard is the only one that all out bites me and has drawn blood. My male albinos who I handle just as often are tame as a puppy. My Carrot tail is the most skittish girl I own, followed closely by my bliz het babys. The het bliz female is a little moody and will give some warnings that she doesn't want to be messed with, but has never bitten me.

I do think the majority of the people here do agree that blizzards just tend to be that way. Maybe once the lines start to get more diversity into them they'll calm down...but right now they seem to have that temperment in most of them. Seems that francis has one of the only tame ones.

Patternless leos tend to be pretty calm. Maybe those are a little more suiting to your tastes? They're almost identical to an adult blizzard when full grown. Most just have more yellow on them. In mu experience, patternless leos are more handleable than blizzards.

bmills May 26, 2003 11:09 PM

Yea, my albino and normal are extremely tame. I think i will stay away from the blizzard, just not one for the aggressive leos...I will leave them for another owner who doesn't mind them...they will get a better home that way. I appreciate all of your input. The consensus pretty much seems for the most part that the blizzards are just aggressive. Appreciate the help again, thanks.

bmills May 26, 2003 11:10 PM

If you know anywhere that has snows, jungles, or leusistics I would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks.

http://www.crestedgecko.com/

They have patternless leos there. I've gotten 4 of my leos from Garrick and he's very nice to deal with. I'm going to try getting some from him later this season ^_^

leopardgex0203 May 27, 2003 12:11 AM

all my leos are really nice i have a couple that can be really cranky and nip your fingers. i have a stripe female that is very cranky most of the time for some reason shes always been that way she has never really bit me but she has bit other people she likes me i am the one whom feeds her so she better like me. i have a Patternless male hes the biggest sweetie. i have 4 normals, 2 tangerines, 1 patternless, 1 stripe, and 2 hatchlings that are normal or tang its hard to tell right now. i know that leos generally get more tame with age but some are more prone to be being not being tame but its hard to tell with juvies i have had some babies from last year that now i can finally hold them now without them trying to jump out of my hand and they are normals. Its just luck of the draw i guess but i wouldn't say its just these certain morphs cuz any leo can have a bad day o boy do i know that one mine can be cranky sometimes i don't handle them often but they don't mind me doing so when i want to most of the time if not i just put them back in their tank and leave them be...i am looking into getting a blizzard and a albino and another patternless and another normal/hi yellow. really don't care about aggressiveness as long as i can mess with it sometimes with me without it biting my fingers off hehe. well good luck with ya'lls geckos

I have a normal and an albino, I handle them daily. I can feed them by hand and pet them on their heads and under their necks. The love to crawl across my shoulders and try to get on my head. They are both very tame. The albino is a little older and is spoiled, when I hold her and try to put her back in the tank, she trys to stay on me, lol. She loves to be held. The normal is getting much more used to being help every day. Neither has ever hissed or bitten me. They are housed together in my 20 gallon long. I have just heard a lot about the blizzards being very aggressive and the patternless being very tame. I am looking for a blizzard, patternless, snow, jungle, or leusistic. If you know where I could find one, let me know please. What do you think about the baby blizzard calming down if I were to get her? Thanks for the input.
