female 3-toe digging nests, how long before she lays?

heatherst3 May 26, 2003 09:51 PM

My male & female boxies have been mating since they came out of hibernation in March. He has left her alone the past few days and she has now been digging nests, but no eggs have been laid. I added some moist sphagnum moss to the cypress mulch in the tank, and she has a big area in one corner of the tank that she has been digging in. Do I need to move him out of the tank so she can lay her eggs? Anything else I need to know or do? Thanks in advance.

If they are both being kept inside a tank, it is recommended that you remove the male. You may want to add a topsoil/sphagnum moss substrate that is a couple inches deeper than the length of the female's back leg, as cypress mulch and sphagnum moss are not the best substrate for egg laying.

Some females won't even lay indoors because they don't feel that its a suitable place to lay. You might want to make her a small outdoor pen.

Thank you both for the advice. I would love to build an outdoor pen but we live in an apartment. I'm going to change the substrate and move him to a different enclosure. Once she lays the eggs, is it acceptable to put him back in with her, or best to wait until next year? Thanks again.
