Another FIRST in California Kingsnakes..

Kerby... Aug 12, 2011 12:35 AM

I only had one clutch of my double hets (Lavender & Ghost) lay eggs. Next year should be 5 clutches.

And I got that 1/16 showing both Ghost and Lavender at the same time. Not sure what to call them yet. I will post a better pic once it sheds.

The double het parents produce a couple of Lavenders, one banded, one striped. Wasn't expecting any striping. But no Ghost in this clutch....except for the Lavender-Ghost. He is on the left.

That makes three years in a row now for producing FIRSTS in California Kingsnake genetics.

2009 - Casper Cal King (Albino Ghost)
2010 - Coral Ghost Cal King (Hypo Ghost)
2011 - Don't have a name Cal King yet (Lavender Ghost)

And the good news is next year I am hoping for more new stuff!

Yea! To the snake Gods!

And here is a pic of one the the Coral Ghost Cal Kings that I produced last year.

I also produced another Casper Cal King and I still have some more clutches to hatch.

Yes, I did good on the odds, but on some projects in cal kings it takes a few years to pop that 1/16 out.

So I am happy.

Awesome! If I buy a king from you can I have that hat?

Where I live in Palos Verdes, CA, they have done alot of "habitat restoration" where they remove the non-native grasses and mustard plants and put in the native coastal sage scrub.

Gophersnakes seem to be OK with the change. Lizards really like it, I'm seeing side blotched now where I never saw them before. But the Cal kings - not sure, but it seems like there are less. Hard to say because they are so secretive in the first place and more time needs to go by to assess, but my guess is that they like the grass and mustard plant better. They are quite concentrated in remaining patches of grass. They love the abused, altered habitat where non-native plants thrive.

Also harder to conceal A/C in the restored habitat. Too visible and they get picked up quickly.

Anyway, glad Cal kings are being propogated with enthusiasm by you. Out here in Calif, much of their former habitat is getting more and more scarce, or relegated to narrow strips.

That is a shame because all the cool cal kings come from California. Here in Arizona they are just banded. The only cool ones are in southern Arizona.

Cool stuff Kerby! That snake's going to look stunning as an adult for sure. Lavender Ghost, maybe you should just call it that?

Very cool.
I have a few cool ones myself I know I will have great difficulty photographing and I am unsure what they really are for now. I need them to shed a time or 3 before I post pics.
