Babies are here!

I thought for sure the two girls bred to my Hypo male would be the first to drop. I guess not! A storm rolled through this morning, and Petunia decided to let loose first!

They are all normals, and my stats were so-so. 9 live, 7 stills (6 full term), & 5 slugs. Petunia is 18 years old, so that could account for the loss. Pretty even sex ratio of 4.5.

Plaid (sire):

Petunia (dam):

Here's the litter after pulling mom and cage furniture out. Sorry for the blurriness.

Hopefully the hypo bred girls won't be far behind!

Hey Aubrey, glad she's still putting out babies for you. IMO the stills are likely drowned in the birthing process, contractions may have ruptured their sacs. Does really suck but happens and don't know if anything can be done to prevent it.

And welcome to them jacking with you re timing. Ginger is now two weeks past what I thought her due date should be.

Thanks Dave! Ahhh... drowning makes a lot of sense! I was wondering why all of them (except for the preemie) were out of the sacs. Too bad.

Oh well, at 18 yrs old I'm happy to get any babies from her!

Gah Ginger! Have those babies already!!!

Aubrey,
...Congrats. Those stills and slugs are always disappointing. Seems like most of my litters with high numbers of fullterm stills have been in litters with slugs like your litter. The slugs are stickier than slimy babies in membranes and they have trouble delivering them and like Dave posted they break membranes trying to deliver. If the babies do not then get delivered quickly they drown.

Thanks Jeff. Your and Dave's theory makes a lot of sense to me. Makes me feel better that the babies were most likely not defective, but still sucks that they could have had a good life. Such is the way of nature though.
