Strange protrusion on snake shed

rosyraptor Aug 14, 2011 06:25 PM

Hello,

I have a 12 year old Rosy Boa who I assume is female, but during her latest shed I noticed a strange protrusion on the shed skin itself. Does anyone know what this is?

As you can see, it is located in the vent area. I never knew that snakes shed their cloacal linings as well. (If that is in fact what this is.) Is it evidence of hemipenes and that my Rosy boa is actually a male?

Thanks!

They could be remnants of the vestigial spurs that all boas have.

I believe that's part of it: there were two small white protrusions off to the side of the brown one in the middle. I'm wondering what the brown one is, though. I've seen pictures of confirmed male snakes with sperm plug sheds in their skins, but they look very different (I'll put that in a link at the bottom).

I'm left wondering what this thing is, though. Lol.
This thread has pics of male snake shed skins.

Could be the interior lining of the scent glands on the female.
