hatchling that has me scratching my head

nodaksnakelover Aug 16, 2011 03:03 PM

Had this hatch out...I'm not sure what's going on, but I suspect it's just something on his skin at this point that will shed away when he sheds for the first time. But close up has me wondering further...I just don't know. But for now this one looks pretty neat. It's a lava corn. Out of normals het lava, charcoal and hypo. This was their second clutch for this year and their first year breeding. Thought I'd share.

Looks like he took a milk bath If it wasn't on his eye I'd say I hope he stays like that as he looks awesome. But it being on his eye, maybe it's better that it goes away with his shed as you suggested. Please post another pic after he sheds!

Yes, the general consensus is that it's going to shed and the white will be gone. There are different ideas floating around why this happens but it has happened to others and they had pics to share. So it isn't so new. But just in case, I'll keep a close eye on it and hope...LOL! Just something I hadn't seen before and had to share. And now from others piping up on another forum, I find that yep, it's happened to others too. Thanks for looking and your comments.

What are a few of the theories you have heard about this?

it's the vermiculite

it's the humidity

it's water blisters

too much calcium

not enough calcium

vitamin deficiency

We've ruled out vermiculite, as this happens in other people's hatchlings in different incubation media. So I'm sure he'll shed out plain lava shortly.

nodaksnakelover Aug 24, 2011 01:16 PM

he shed out normally, all white is gone. Just a nice little lava
