Possible good eggs

reptileszz Oct 01, 2003 07:49 AM

Hi all, I figured I wouldn't ask this question til things looked particularly good. I am incubating rhino eggs for John while he is away. I started out with about 25 eggs from 3 clutches. One clutch looked bad to start with and they have already been frozen plus I lost a couple earlier this month. Now it APPEARS that there are about a dozen that might actually go the distance. One of the clutches might hatch at the end of this month.

Assuming all hatch (I know, huge assumption) how are this many babies generally kept? What size tanks do you guys keep them in and how about how many per tank?? I am not sure I ever thought they would really hatch and of course they still may not. Just wondering what the procedure is for hatchling rearing.

Thanks!
Carole

I would house them all together in a twenty gallon aquarium or like sized cage, about a 2 x 2. When first hatched, they wont show aggression until they are 3 to 8 months old. Sometimes, they will never show aggression. This will just be temporary until you sell them / find homes for them or until they outgrow the enclosure. Ideally, you would house each idividually in a 5 or 10 gallon aquarium, but then you will have to provide each a heat lamp and UV light, which you may not have the room for, the aquariums, or extra money for the electricty bill. My lewisi is in a ten gallon aquarium, and probably will be able to stay there for one year (mabey).

all together in a 20 gallon? WOW. This makes my day. I cant even really comprehend how large they are at hatching. I mean, I see the egg but... hard to see what is going to come out of there. All they have to do for me is get along in a smallish container til John gets back in December sometime.

Thank you so much!
