I have a clutch of whiteside brooksi eggs and out of 14, 5 eggs are still alive. The first one pipped last night and crawled its way out of the egg today but it seems the yolk sac was never fully absorbed and it was still attached, its head and body looked great but right around its cloaca, it looks as though its tail is folded in half and the skin just fused together, what causes this? Its a big baby too, my temps were at 75 degrees and I kept the vermiculite moist, I'm a little disapointed. Thanks

There are so many variables it's difficult to guess. I have a hypo Everglades rat that produces kinked babies with every female I breed him to, so I stopped using him as a breeder. Not saying that's what happened to you, just one example. Did the eggs that went bad have babies in them?

OK well, those were infertile. Did the others hatch yet? if so how many were kinked?

Only one has hatched so far, hopefully the other four will hatch normal, thanks

Yeah, that's too bad about the fused together one. I have also had hatchlings that were very deformed and fused together over the years all the way up the belly to where they folded and conjoined and looked very similar to a little girl's paper dolls. Needless to say most of these had to be humanely euthanized in the freezer, or fed to an ophiophagous king.

It is very disappointing to see, and there could be several reasons for it. Many times too high of a temp makes kinks and other deformities, but who knows exacly why it happens other times?. Just part of the breeding game I guess..*shrug*
