Lighting/heat for enclosure

DeuceBx Aug 18, 2011 09:39 AM

I have a 10 month old red tail in a 40 gallon critter cage, and I was using a Zilla lamp with a 100 watt bulb but switched to a Zilla Tropical 25 UVB flourescent bulb (which looks as if it has a shortage because the light keeps going out) for lighting and warmth during the day and a ceramic heat lamp for overnight heat. My question is: Why does the light keep going out, and are those fixtures sufficient for this enclosure. I also have a undertank heating pad "suitable for a 30-40 gal." My basking area is usually around 85 degrees and the cool side is about 75 during the day. At night the temps drop about 5 degrees on each side.

Thanks for that advice, it actually worked. My only problem now is that the temperature is pretty low. Does the flourescent bulb give off heat or should I turn the ceramic lamp on during the day in addition?
