Problematic feeder tip...

lucy47 Aug 18, 2011 10:18 PM

A few days ago I talked with a friend who is very knowledgable about Floridana Kings and Kings in general. He suggested scenting with goo from a Snake egg and then he mentioned wondering if chicken egg goo works as well. I tried that tonight on a juvenile Florida King and he ate a pinkie dipped in chicken egg white! He has refused every meal which includes Gecko scent, live pinks, live soft fur rat pinks and even a live baby Corn Snake. If anyone is having a tough time with some babies I think its worth a try.

Could have been he finally got hungry and ate the slimy pinky you offered anyway.

Seriously, some floridana wait a month (or 2 even) before they eat. Some just take a while to develope a palate for food.

These animals live in nature, without you. They know when to eat, when not to eat, how much to eat, etc. Why do you think they cannot do that in captivity? They do know, you are suppose to support what THEY DO, not hold back food because you keep them at temps they would not pick.

or maybe he just found something that sparked his interest. His 7 other sibs all ate unscented or scented pinks. Dont know why one would hold out. He was getting thin but not skinny. Sometimes you simply got to get the right combo of smells. Granted Ive never really had problems with Floridana but these are from a gravid WC female so they werent selectely bred to eat FT pinks like most Floridana out there.

This the probable Father to the clutch. He was found locked up with the female but he may not be the first or only male to breed the female.

I agree there are occasional holdouts but many times it's just finding what they want....they know what they want we just have to somehow make it available.

Well with Florida kings.... (and i am not talking about eastern kings or geybands etc)... I have found that they all eat unscented pinks in time. Just have to be patient.

I used to scent but discovered it may not be the scenting or braining. just the timing matched when they finally decided to eat.

the way i found out was if I have a group that is not feeding and i set them aside . What happened is I offered pinks and they all didn't eat. Then later on, I offered tme scented or brained. They ate. But then the ones in teh same group ate unscented. i just used regular unscented pinks in with them and viola', they ate as well.

Now i just wait them out. they don't seem to lose weight. I do however offer live pinks to those "late" feeders. Just to make it easier to remove the pinks so they don't decompose.

of course, I am just saying this about Floridas. not other groups of kingsnakes. Even other getula like eastern edisto islands, mosaics etc. are hardcore snake feedrs when born.

Hi Lu,

Do you think if that baby was in nature it would pass up any kind of prey, like pinks?

"its kinda like your model builders that work from a kid, if you follow the instructions, its suppose to come out well. Unfortunately, snakes are alive and all manner of things can go wrong, at any time for a million reasons. The truth is, most of those reasons are NOT INCLUDED IN YOUR KIT(husbandry recipe) that you get over the internet. Those are the fun things you get to learn on your own.

Its like you folks think your perfect. Well how you judge that is not what you think, but your results. They tell you how good you did. And that means, past tense. As each and every time you do it, your can succeed or fail. There are no guarantees, no matter how much you know. You must apply your knowledge, each and everytime, and each and everytime the results are a measure of your ability and effort. "
