It was the first time in 10 years I didn't have a table. It let me gab with friends much more and I enjoyed that for sure.
Lots of vendors were absent, a smaller "feel" overall. Nowhere near the heyday of that show.
Not sure about sales but I did see some wholesalers buying and Sat. crowd was o.k. I guess. I did not buy anything myself......
Wait to see what others say......a few rumors about the Daytona show were floating around...

a few rumors about the Daytona show were floating around
Whatever they were i hope they were true because that show went downhill quick. Any cghange would be an improvement. Cause it can't get much worse IMHO>!
It is all about money for the promoter. just like most shows today. Wayne would never move the show back to the Radiison in orlando because he just would'nt get as many tables in there. Less tables equal less profit.
KJust like Walmart, Delta airlines etc and other large corporations. It is about making cutbacks and shaving money here and there. Overhead is the bottom line.

I believe ther will be a F.I.R.E. show in the "Twin Towers" of Orlando soon.....where some of the best N.R.B.E.expos were held in years prior to Daytona...Wayne was a vendor at the show this year...had some nice turtles....

I don't care for the FIRE shows. More like a petting zoo attraction.
To make some of the experinced vendor come back and dispay some unique animals it has to go back to its roots. I don't know if we will ever see that again.

mark,
jeez i think it was 10 years ago that i first went to daytona and met you and a bunch of other guys from the forum face to face. happy anniversary, everybody lol!
wow 10 years lots happened since then...
i am glad that you were able to have some fun this time.
funny, my wife was egging me on about 10 days ago to take the kids to daytona. i wasn't interested in 40 hours of driving and didn't think my guys would "get it". so instead we went to steam town in scranton pa (great train museum if those things interest you) and then cut west to allenwood to visit clyde peeling's reptiland. great looking vivariums, great animals. the kids "got it" and had a great time.
if daytona still has a pulse i'll probably visit next year w/ my oldest.

This was my first Daytona show since it moved from Orlando. Most colubrid vendors did quite well. But then again not many to choose from. I picked up a nice splotched albino nelsoni real cheap and another pyro from Dennis Thomas, but that was it. From what I saw there was no L.p.pyromelana morphs, minimal floridana and calfornia morphs, 2 L.t.annulata, a handful of L.t.gentilis and multistrata. 1 L.knoblochi, no greyband morphs, no L.temporalis, no sinaloan morphs and just to tables of normals. 1 OBX King, so needless to say not much to choose for colubrids.
My star animal of the show probably had to be a asian ratsnake from Stan Grumbeck. His Hypo moellendorffi. And for Lampropeltis, had to be the only one splotched albino nelsoni that I bought.
Lots of beers and good times with the Lassiters and the mean ole moderator! LOL. It was also nice to be able to talk to some of the veterans. All in all good time. Hopefully others chime in if I missed something.

Jimmy,
I am sure it coudn't have been that bad. Maybe you missed some tables?
Either way, if it was anything like last year. YUK!
The best part (and really worth going for me) is to see old friends and hang out in the hotel lobby on friday and sat nights. That alone is worth going. The rest NOT!

Rainer, it was that bad. I may have missed a few items but what I listed is what I wanted to purchase so I was looking for most of those animals. Yes have to agree the best part was hanging out for sure.

I love Tinley Park! I only live about 4 hours away, so make it there almost every year. I remember seeing quite a bit of colubrids.... but of course it is still dominated by Balls and Geckos.

Daytona still had the wholesalers buying, and still had the international guys there. I still think it may hold together because of thar aspect. I heard really good things about Tinley too, but then again how many breeders are going to travel with their animals? Just my thoughts.....

Ya know, for you all Tinley may very well stink. But I never really watch for the colubrid stuff too much. For me Tinley is *THE* show. The highest content of my australian worms. There is a large morelia contingent there. Some colubrids... I like the overall feel of the show however.. To me it's home. There is I think a wider variety of species, however there is still the heavy ball python feel. Anaheim is also pretty spiff. Its cool to see the beadeds there as well as last year seeing Indigo.

The one Outer Banks you saw there was an aberrant female I gave to Howie S. to give to Craig Trumbower. When he later found it wasn't a 1.1 sexual pair, Howie gratiously returned her to me.
I wanted to talk to you some more there but it was impossible to find you again..LOL! As a matter of fact, wasn't it in front of Howie's table where we saw each other?..LOL!
I bought a few supplies there, but didn't go to get any animals at all. Besides getting what I needed there, my main focus is always talking to good friends around the country while looking around.

"a snake in the grass is a GOOD thing"
Yep that be the same one. Howie did have a huge greeri at his table though. Yea I left kinda early saturday, and there was a good amount of people there on saturday. It took me till sunday to find Steve Osborne to chat knoblochi. He was never at his table. I'll catch up with you at another show. I should be going to the F.I.R.E show at the Towers next month.

"a snake in the grass is a GOOD thing"
i looked at a lot of eastern kings and bought just a single lee abbott okeetee red rat.
there were some interesting things: mike falcon's exceptional ghost hondo (melanin ONLY on the head, so it looked like a snow body with a ghost head); several beautiful hatchling t albino nelson; rhino rats; etc. But not the size of prior shows. Saturday's traffic looked pretty good to me and several friends told me they moved a lot of snakes in just the first few hours of the show, i suppose wholesalers buying up early instead of at the end of sunday's hours. Oh, and one vendor selling rattlesnake rattles. Must have had close to 100 of them in a jar. Just didn't seem right...

What a circus. I tell you, this show has becaome like the other shows like the Fire show etc.
Ever since Wayne moved it to the other building and had the food court in the middle of the animals i knew he caved.
Pretty soon certain people won't show and then we won't have the reason to meet each other there anymore.
I am afraid to go next year because certain people just won't be there anymore.
Shame.

Here's my assessment........
Not as many vendors selling animals as in the past years.....
Lots of tables selling trinkets....
Lots and lots of ball pythons, geckos and boas.....
Few colubrids in comparison to boids and gex.....
Better purchasing going on.......not a lot of bp purchasing either.....most of the bps for sale were one to two years old....the breeders are not selling them as much as everyone thinks......I see a VERY saturated market that I cannot wait to see fall......IMHO......
Not a single zonata, 3 Mex Mex, 1 knoblochi, a handful of pyros and as always.....mislabeled hybrids.......sinoloans, ruthveni, nelsons and amel thayeri.........
Lee Abbott, Peace River, Howie Sherman, Dennis Thomas, Jim Minesinger and others sold colubrids well.....again, IMHO.....
I only picked up 4 hatchlings........1.1 melanistic thayeri and 1.1 cal kings......
Rubbing elbows and the bar room conversation was fun again......

Poor planning and procrastination on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part...

Yep, those were pretty much my thoughts there too John. I saw all those mislabeled snakes too, and pointed out some to a VERY well-known to many vender/field herper as well that I saw on his table. He had no idea they were not what they were labeled as until I pointed out some of the very bogus characteristics that were very out-of place for what it was "supposed" to be...LOL! I showed him each little individual detail that told me it was definitely NOT what it was supposed to be. I said, "this looks like something that "so-and-so" would produce". He immediately started cracking up and said..."holy crap!,..I can't believe this!, that is EXACTLY who I got these snakes from!!!"..LOL!. I sort of doubt he ever re-labeled them what they really were either, and I know he was a bit embarrassed that I pointed this out to him being that he is such a well-known name in this hobby. But this is how it goes now days. It pays to really know what certain subspecies and different traits are supposed to look like is all I can say..LOL!
Good seeing you, your wife, and all the other's there John!..
ps, That amel "thayeri" was a real joke too, wasn't it??.HAHAA!!. But all that is to be expected at a show I guess.
Buyer beware is all I can say to folks in this hobby, but the great majority wouldn't have any idea as we both know all too well..

the OKC one sucked...sorry, know that isn't the one you were asking about
Sold about 300 worth of snakes. Not much selection. Not a lot of foot traffic. I felt gypped, didn't sell any of my baby kings, just surplus sub adult animals I had.
Sad part was I did better than most other vendors. I'll probably still be back because it is a very easy show to go to and I had 2 people express an interest in buying 2 of my retics at the October show (higher dollar snakes. Not many people walk into a local show with 1200 dollars ya know?0.
