Burmese Eye Problem?

Reptile World May 26, 2003 10:09 PM

After a shed my burmese started to develop an eye problem. I thought it was a retained eye cap at first, so I gently tried to remove it after soaking him, but that wasnt the case. It got a little worse after a second shed, but now it is staying the same. I make sure he gets plenty of water and I spray him down good when he starts shedding. I imagine that is keeping it from getting any worse. I have attached a pic so that maybe someone can identify the problem. It seems as if the scales around the eye are growing over the eye itself?

I plan on taking him to the vet, but as of now I cant really find any good local vet that really know about reptiles. The one vet I was considering going to I will not go to anymore, as he told me he put a 2 foot gator under anesthesia just to do some simple bloodwork! If you all dont know, anesthesia is very dangerous for crocodilians and should be reserved for surgery only. Anyway, I need to find a new vet, and in the mean time any information as to what this could be is apreciated. Thanks.

Get someone that has removed them before to gently pull them out and away from his eye. They should remove quite easily. But please make sure it's someone that knows what they're doing.

I used to breed ball pythons and I have had a lot of experiance with wild caught ball pythons as well. I have removed retained eyecaps in the past with no problems. I tried to see if that was actually the problem when I first noticed something, and I really dont think that it is. There is nothing to grap onto to remove it, and it actually seems like new scales are growing over the eye! I am trying to get a better picture, but aparently myy digital camera doesnt focus well on extreme closeups. If I can manage to get a better pic I will post it. Thanks.

It just looks like the snake has more than one and has grown considerably since the first and thus it is much smaller than her present day eye/lens cover. But I am not there, so I suppose I could be wrong. But it REALLY looks like that to me. Why don't you ask a few of the resident pros before you conclude that it is somehow scales growing over the eye. K? Rob, Highlander, and a few other may lend a little additional insight here. (no pun intended)

I guess the reason I didnt recognize it was because it was multiple eye caps, not just one or two. I tried some of the non evasive procudures mentioned on the indigo forum. I dampned a snake bag, put her inside, tied that up and put it in a sterlite container, and then I left her in a warm area. Two hours later I took her out and gently touched the eye area and it shifted. I left her in a little longer and then I was able to just rub off the old eyecaps. Now whe can see clearly again and I didnt have to try and tweeze anything off of her. Thanks all for your help.
