stud service?

tweedaldumb Aug 22, 2011 02:35 PM

wow, it has been a couple of years since i have been on this site and i can't believe how far the snakes have come! they are all so beautiful.
My problem is I want one of everything, but a wife that doesn't want me to have any. Even with prices coming down on the snakes i must have (bees for the most part) they are still out of my reach. My wife would kill me if i spent $500 on a "pet." So my question is, would it be wrong of me to ask some local breeders if they would be willing to incorporate my beautiful 07 normal female into their mix. I don't know if its something that happens regularly because most breeders are in competition with each other, but i just want beautiful snakes, not to be a breeder/competition. The worst thing that could happen is i could be told no, but i hear that every night from the wife, so it wouldn't hurt my feelings. How would you handle this situation with your collections? Thank you for your time.

Let's see:

1) Wife doesn't like snakes!

2) Wife would kill you if you spent $500 on a snake!

3) Wife says no to you every night!

4) Need I go on?

tweedaldumb Aug 22, 2011 03:53 PM

Yes, you must go on :P you didn't answer my question. My wife will tolerate my hobby, but she doesn't get into it like i do. The thought of me spending 500 on a snake kills her because that could have gone towards her coach purse collection. I guess it was a failed attempt at making a joke.

I think you need to do some serious talking with the wife and find a compromise.
As for the studding...if you find a responsible breeder who says yes, it will most likely go down like this:
A contract will be made stating what you want to keep, what happens if your snake gets sick in his care, becomes egg bound etc etc because ANYTHING can happen.
You will most likely give the snake to him 2 months BEFORE breeding season (so now) so it can be quarantined to make sure nothing is wrong with it (at least a smart breeder would do this.)
The would cycle it into their breeding rotation, and see what happens. Your best bet to get what you want is to find someone with a killer bee to breed to your normal, and make the contract so you get one male bumblebee and they get the rest (only way to really make it worthwhile for them)

Good luck.

I totally forgot about quarantine time. That would sound like a good deal for me if i could find someone in southern California willing to take a chance on me, but I'm guessing that the chances of that are pretty slim. Thank you for your time in answering me.
It sounds like my best bet is to see were the prices go this year as eggs hatch and to go from there. I was out of the morph side of things for a while, just being a pet owner dealing with life, when i wandered across some sexy spiders while waiting for a rat and the bug bit me again.

I too am looking in getting a bee of some sort. I wanted to get a male bumble or killer bee to start. Its probably too late to get a male at breeding weight. I would definitely help in breeding your girl, but dont have a morph yet. Good luck...

Buy a killer bee. Then you can sell him, his offspring, and your incubator after you hatch some bees and pastels. Justify the purchase by reasoning that you'll make a profit, at least break even, or have a less net dollar expense than current prices in the long run.
You might even make her a fan, when she sees those cute little heads pipping

tweedaldumb Aug 23, 2011 05:35 PM

I would love to be able to do that! My children would love to watch all the stages of life as well! I was thinking of doing it one year with just normals so that it could be a family project, but i figured that there were enough normals coming from everyone else that i didnt want to breed what I couldnt find homes for. The thought of doing something wrong and costing the babys their lives also scares me.
I never thought of the money argument though, thats def something i will have to throw in when it comes time to bring a new snake home. I think she knows me too well though, i would have trouble selling the babys, I would want to keep them all!

You can find a bee at a show for closer to $300.
Or, go the long way. Buy a male paste ($75) and make female pastels. Hold them back and buy a male spider later ($150)...make bees.
You'll easily make enough for the spider by selling extra pastels and normals from the pastel x normal breeding.

Good luck.

I spent about 2 hours today showing my oldest daughter(9) pictures on here and explaining what makes what. I think she is just as excited as I am to get some bees going I think this would be a great project for us to undertake together, and i will be able to hand pick the snakes that I would like to produce my bees. The only bad thing is that by the time I get the male pastel to weight, bees will probably be in my price range. Not a big deal though, Ive got nothing but time. I just want them now, lol. We are both very excited for the Anaheim show coming up in a week and a half. Would love to find a 2010 holdover male so we can make a go at something this breeding season.

Violetdixie Aug 23, 2011 11:06 PM

I worry about finding homes for normals too, but all in all - I think that my fear is irrational. While I dont have many friends who like snakes, I think it's pretty cool when they admit that mine are pretty, want to hold them AGAIN, and are excited to see the babies. Nothing wrong with giving normals away to friends to increase the ball python enthusiasts. And you wouldn't get any normals anyways, if you got a killer bee. You would only get pastels and bees

tweedaldumb Aug 24, 2011 12:39 AM

As much as that would be amazing to be able to get a killerbee, they are a little bit beyond my price range still. I really don't think i would have problems finding homes for the babies, if i was able to let go of them, I just don't want to be irresponsible about it.
