MBrawley splendida was pretty ugly

Bluerosy Aug 23, 2011 12:58 AM

Com'n guys. Can't you get a little more creative?

I read a lot of posts stating, "Gorgeous snake!","gorgeous", "takes the cake", "the best i have ever seen!", "Stunning pattern!" and such. Quite often for wild types too. Using the "For there to be good, there must be evil" argument, does anyone have any pictures of horrible looking snakes then?

Corns are pretty bland
Kingsnakes have no head shape.
Hognoses are just downright fugly.
Blood pythons and sand boas remind me of stuffed sausages.
Scaleless ...Bueller, hello..anyone??
elephant trunk snake?
calabar boas?
Bull snakes?
Anacondas?

Maybe this guy?

So lets hear your favorite ugly snake?

Wild yearling Northern Rubber Boa (Charina bottae) with all black eyes. San Mateo County. Flipped under a board.

What about a snake that needs a pair of glasses? lol

Seem to remember this question... couple of three years ago...RFUK I think... but to answer the question...

I like "wild" types. Can't think of any ugly ones just odd/different/unique.

Meaning no offense to those that do like them but IMO "ugly" comes into play with most things labeled blizzard,snow... and especially those labeled jelly,P.B.,lavender,piebald... again, IMO

seconded. i'd rather see an unimpressive wild snake than one whose color/pattern is named after sandwich condiments. few and far-between is the designer morph phenotype that "improves" the appearance of a reptile. like excessive plastic surgery, most morphs only degrade the natural beauty of a critter.

all of this is said with the all-important qualifier: In My Humble Opinion

Bluerosy Aug 23, 2011 06:52 AM

"seconded. i'd rather see an unimpressive wild snake than one whose color/pattern is named after sandwich condiments."

Well your guys'es opinon is the minority.

When the NAME Peanut Butter came out for the new Florida king morph, I asked people ON THIS FORUM to PICK a name and then from sevral suggestion everyone voted on which name should be used. Guess what everyone picked?..That's right,, PEANUT BUTTER. lol!

I had nothing to do with choosing the name. I left it totally up to the forum posters on here.

The situation back then was the name HYPO had already been in use. So to differentiate the common "hypo" designation from this new hypo morph. A new name was to be selected.

In the end I think Peanut butter was the perfect name . because no other morph shares an allele on a single locus like the peanut Butter does with the T negative. So it really ended up be a unique trait. Which deseved a unique name. But the folks on here and muself did not know that it could do that, at that time. LOL!

Hey there are much stranger names in taxonomy. People using their last names to label an animal after themselves. That to me is totally selfish, self centered, self grandizing.

Do you have numbers/facts/data showing that turtlejo/GerardS/I are indeed in the minority or must I simply take you on your word? Whether or not we are indeed in the minority...

I'm not faulting the snake for being called/labeled a Peanut Butter... I'm faulty it because IMO it's ugly... forum members could have picked any name and you could have agreed to any name and IMO they would still be ugly. If it matters at all I prefer the looks of your PB's when compared to the prettily named Lavenders... the name has nothing to do with it, I find the colors and contrasts drab/muted/washed out... they simply don't float my boat.

Again no offense is intended, if you and 99.9% of the reptile community think them beautiful... great! I don't expect a single person to share my opinion... I much prefer people with their own opinions.

Gerry

Bluerosy Aug 23, 2011 06:34 PM

I don't think the Penaut Butters are all that. Just that when they mix with other recessive traits really hot stuff happens.

back then the Peanut butter was a new morph. And as with any new morph. They look beautiful just because they are new.

Nothing looks better than a nice wc brooksi. When it comes to morphs I didn't mind the hypo brooks that Doug Beard always had when I was growing up. Now they don't look the same and I have no interest in them. This is of course my opinion.

Bluerosy Aug 23, 2011 09:13 PM

With the normals i have seen so many different types. That and normals from mixed phenotypes, like when you get possible hets from triple het het to breeding. That they are just like a common albino cal king or any other common snake. not that the natural w/c forms aren't beautiful. Just common, like waking up and looking in the mirror.

I keep a lot of rare stuff that not many people work with but true locality brooksi never get boring. This year I got a pair of occipitolineata and I am really excited about them. They don't have a million colors and they are cooler than any color morph of king you can imagine. I don't think there is any ugly snake. What exactly do you like?

Conversely, Rainer, thinking of whatever you can't have or can't afford as UGLY is a great way to make the circumstances more bearable.

Thanks Tom, it is actually a very pink line of Ghost called Specters. They originated from Kathy Loves Naples Ghost, but was then sold to someone else. They look even better in person, as pink is very hard to capture on film.

No pictures but I have seen some FUGLY albino boas. Some pretty ones too though.

And anthrax/granite back retics are ugly.
So are black pastel or chocolate balls.

I've actually seen a pretty hideous corn snake--lots of muddy wash, could barely see the saddles.

We wouldn't have 6 and a half billion people if you had to be beautiful to get laid.

koogie Aug 23, 2011 11:28 AM

I think all snakes have something beautiful about them. Maybe in their movement, pattern, whatever. I LOVE hognoses and think they are beautiful. I don't own any. I also think the heads on my kings are awesome. Most people are kind to one another and like to admire their collections, from cars to snakes. I think you like being a troublemaker. Koogie
